Can someone tell me how to open an old American Flyer transformer case to inspect and clean?
I have an American Flyer 1B and an American Flyer 8B.
The cases look to be sealed, but I am assuming there is a way to open the cases and get a look inside.
Thanks.

Sorry, the American Flyer 1B should read American Flyer 1A.
Not sure about your transformer but I have seen some that need a special screwdriver to remove the screws with. Looks like somebody kit-bashed a flat-tip screwdriver with an allen head wrench. If it is a special screw to remove try going to Sears in the hardware section and getting a Craftsman screwdriver or Snap-on Tools might have the screwdriver you need.
If it is rivots that hold it on you need to drill the heads off the rivots and replace with sheet metal screws about half an inch long, much longer than half an inch may cause a short.

Remove two screws on top one near the reset button and one over the A in American Flyer. Then lift the housing from the base. I can't help you with the 1A .

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thanks, that worked !
As a kid many, many years ago, I used to look at that transformer and figured that it was sealed to keep kids like me from trying to open it. I never imagined that those screws on top were the key.
Thanks again,
