I have an old Lionel Junior set (1700 set) and am wondering if Classic Toy Trains ever did an article on this set and whether anyone knows the month and year it was published. I would like to get a copy of it if there was ever one published. Thanks!!
I know it was done, but it was at least 10 years ago I think. Not a whole lot to report on these, a few different types of silver and red, some actually chrome, some painted silver, and the rare orange / gray and yellow / brown versions.
Great little sets. Easy to work on. I've always got one on my layout.

Many thanks! I have one that belonged to my uncle (many years passed) but I have always kept it since he gave it to me in the 50's. It is red and chrome and in really great shape. I run it occasionally just to make sure everything still works and was just wondering if there was any current information on the set in general.

I notice that this thread is almost a year old, but I've just discovered it.
I also have a 1700. It was my mother's when she was a kid, but was out of action until I replaced the missing center-rail power pickups. She gets quite a kick out of seeing it running on an oval of FasTrack every Christmas.
Mine has a silver nose and red lower trim. It has no E-unit, nor any way to manually put it in reverse. I used to think that only the 1700E was equipped with an E-unit, but then, I seem to recall someone posting that they had a 1700 with an E-unit, so I don't know the truth of the matter. Maybe someone more schooled in prewar Lionel than I can settle the question.
I'm not aware of any source of deeper information on the 1700. It seems to be largely under the radar.
