mikado smoke and headlight problem
Posted by LocoPops on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 12:35 PM

My Lionel Mikado (w/TMCC) was an excellent smoker.  Then all of a sudden, the smoke and highlight quit.  I tried running it conventional, and the smoke still didn't work, but the headlight did!

I've reset and re-programmed the engine.  No diff.  I've checked for loose or broken wires.  Nothing.

All other functions are OK.  Just no smoke with or without TMCC, and no headlight with TMCC.

Does anyone know what might be the problem?  Thank you.

I have a Mikado Jr. and these have worked for me. Look at the simple stuff first.

The headlight sounds like it is turned off in comand control. While in comand mode address the engine and then press AUX 2, that should turn the light on and off.

For the smoke, check to make sure it is turned on, in the cab at the back of the loco the switch on the left turns the smoke unit on and off. The switch slid to left is on and to the right is off. Sounds dumb but it can happen.

If that is not it for the smoke most likely the resistor smoke element is burned out. I have gone through a couple with mine. I hope it is just the switch.

 JT,

Thank you the reply.  Yes, I've checked the switch.  And I've used the command mode for the light and smoke.  Nothing there.  Your resistor suggestion sounds good.  There's just that nagging business of the light working only in conventional.  But that may be just a coincidence, and not at all related to the smoke problem.  Thanks again.
