I know it isn't Sunday, but need to post this when I can. Won't be able to get it out Sunday.
The long awaited special order has finally arrived in So. Cal.. We had been on the waiting list for over a year, the excitment was due to a special delivery of farm equipment. Thee "Farm Equipment" a special pair of John Deere tractors. Of course the company had made arrangements for the delivery in the company owned box car. (Which was incredible, in of its self! The car was one of a set of three!)
A priority consist was immediately scheduled to get the car to the local distributor. They have been so busy that their inventory had been practically depleted.
Their expansion plans included adding a new siding for future deliveries.
Due to the urgent situation, time was not wasted to get the equipment off loaded. (There were severe weather warnings regarding 5 winter storms that were headed in "back to back", and there was a significant penalty if the delivery car wasn't turned around within 24 hours.)
Jon Engleharp was on hand to inspect the tractors upon arrival. His primary goal was inspecting the paint job. (He was known to be totally "green". He had thought that the ecology programs were nothing more than a marketing plot by JD. He complied by only wearing green clothes!)
Engleharp tried to buy the box car from the engineer, and offered him numerous gifts, including a lifetime pass to all the Angel's games. (Engleharp, knew the half time coordinator, former band student.) The engineer stuffed the pass in his pocket and told Engleharp he would think about it.
Finally, the deal was made ! Engleharp was happy and the engineer slipped into the night.
Now, this whole episode would have ended verry happily at this point. But, unbeknowst to Engleharp, the engineer was nothing less than a undercover police officer. The officer was none other than the infamous Buckfoot! He had a reputation that was beyond compare. Throughout the country Buckfoot had resolved numerous crimes of stolen bridges. He was so slick, he could talk a southern gentleman right out of his accent. Buckfoot was not going to let the box car be hijacked by Engleharp.
In the meantime, another devious character had marshaled up a neighboring farmer and his union associates. Farmer Al(l) and his wife Alice Chalmers were extremely concerned about potential future success of the JD dealership and put their own plan into place.
And it was quite simple, "Simply go in and steal the car, then they couldn't bring anymore tractors out."
But, as you would know, the union wasn't really well organized, and two crews tried to recover the car.
Unfortunately, with all the teamwork the car was Torn Apart !
Now Engleharp, just was not going to let that happen! He had heard the ruckus, and got his friends together and launched an attack on Farmer Al(l) and wife Alice Chalmers.
They were absolutly ruthless!! In no time they had up rooted the underweighted insurgents, and knocked them on their back sides.
Tolerance wasn't in order, even Oldtimers came in to help.
After it was all over, the car was completly repaired. And upon the consulting services of the local constable, a double guard was put together to escort the special car back home.
As far as Buckfoot, he narrowly avoided be apprehended, after escape to a sheep farm and hiding for a few weeks, he headed north to the snow country and was run over by a Duzenburg. Engleharp, expanded his dealership, and was last heard of trying to put together a Marching Tractor Band.

Great job, Don. I really enjoyed that.
Somehow, I think I know those people.

John Deere stuff is always neat to look at. MTH hit a homerun with the JD locos and freight cars.

Great pictures and story! Thanks.
I really enjoyed your post. ? about the grass. What did you use? Thanks.
traindaddy1I really enjoyed your post. ? about the grass. What did you use? Thanks.
I looked at various home supply stores, and ended up going to a Carpet Store. Of course they had a much larger variety, and much more "realistic". Actually, it was less expensive as well.
I am gonna miss these vignettes.
Great job Don. As for grass. It has to come from home improvement stores in Southern CA. No real grass exists [except the kind outlawed and smoked ]

A most excellent story Don Thanks goodness it survived the grits attack in NC! I'm going to try and get a few pics posted this next week of all three of those JD boxcars, sure glad to have them.
Another good photo site is Photobucket, for some odd reason certain sites won't work with Shutterfly for me. I have to think it's operator error for me.
