will this voltage spike protector work???????
Posted by Berk765 on Saturday, January 9, 2010 12:58 PM

Ok I went down to Radioshack to see if I could find the TVS that so many members suggested to me, but I couldn't find it. So I went around the forums reading about this item and Bob said it was a type of copaciter. And there was a drawer at the store labled that and I found this type of surge protector. It is a heavy duty metal oxide varistor voltage spike protector for 125VAC circuits. Its part number is 276-568c. I was being lazy and didn't want to order something that tiny off of the internet but I realize it could mean the difference between fried trains and happy trains. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You won't find it at Radio Shack.  Here's a link to the latest discussion:

(It's not a capacitor.  Where did you find that?)

I think you did. Oh well I'll just order it then.

That's not what I would use.  Those have a TVS from each side of the circuit to a separate ground wire.  I would put a single TVS directly across each circuit, effectively center rail to outside rails.

They also include fuses, which will protect your wiring if properly sized, but blow unnecessarily on momentary overloads.  I recommend thermal circuit breakers for overcurrent protection.  You can get them at most auto-parts stores.

I got an e-mail asking how to order a TVS from Mouser.

Go to the Mouser web site, http://mouser.com/

Enter the Mouser part number that I posted in the earlier topic, 625-1.5KE36CA-E3 .  You can change the "36" to another voltage if you think that's what you want.

Select the first part listed, which is the one you searched for.  Enter the quantity you want and click "BUY".  Then follow the instructions to select shipping, payment method, address, etc.

Notice that shipping will cost far more than the TVS; so you might want to order a handful.

Bob, it works fine and I do not use their fuses.  I use a fast acting breaker box before the TVS.  I am running three separate Post War ZW transformers through the TIU to breaker box to TVS.  No a problem at all.  Got 23 NS modern engines and no fried boards yet.
