Modern production or original?  I have the modern version, which has a Can Motor.

Simple PullMor motor and a solenoid.  What's not working?

Not sure yet as just got it . Needs some soldering and lube. The scoop was broken where attached to

arm and solenoid and is fixed [maybe]. I've got the instruction sheet which helps but would like more in depth info.

I'd have to recommend Classic Toy Trains magazine!  Especially the current issue! Big Smile

Thanks Jon for Rec. on mags to read. Bought Jan issue .Very good, the supplement especially.Took my old #97 to our local train repair wizard,he soldered two wires that came loose ,connected it to Trans. and damned if it didn't work. Amazing after all the years ,I'm sure it's near 60. Jay

Not to bug you but I'm stuck on something you may be able solve .I used your suggested sights in ref. to more info on #97 coal elavator. I later tried to use the sight to get info on parts for #397 coal loader and nothing worked . Was able to get pics and parts list for 2500 series passenger cars 31 and 33 only. Mostly by dumb luck. Not sure what I'm doing wrong or do I have to purchase a cd or what. Can you straighten me out? Jay

The Olsen's site is a precious resource, in my opinion, but it doesn't always work for me. Sometimes it partially works; that is, I can get to some pages but not others. Neither they nor I can figure out why.

Make sure you get past the offers for CD's etc. What you want is the "Library" and certain other pages, especially the Madison Hardware Auction materials, Sal's List, etc. It's a very big site, and you can search for things several ways. It pays to spend some time to get familiar with it.

The #97 Coal Elevator is a bit unusual. You called it a "post-war" model, *  and indeed it is listed as a post-war accessory, but it actually came out prior to WWII, and the more detailed pages can be found  under "Pre-war Accessories." That's where you'll find a diagram to go along with a parts list.

If you find the site helpful, and wish to support it (websites cost $$$ to maintain) consider it as a source for repair parts. They have quite an extensive inventory. (Not all parts are available. Some parts may be available from Lionel itself if they fit the relatively modern re-issue.)

* To distinguish it from the modern reissued version.

I don't know for certain, but I suspect that many of the parts are interchangeable. You may be able to find some at other parts dealers, train shows, Ebay, or straight off the internet.

You're welcome. Health permitting I am likely to be around for a while yet.
