Excellent link, thanks!!!!!!!!!

I was right just by the looks, 100-5 is the unit I need.  I am not finding complete rebuild kits so I may as well just order another e unit complete and solder it in.

Do any of you guys know the part number I need to replace the E unit.  Is it a 100-5?

This is an old postwar 40's or 50's locomotive.  The fingers are ready to break and the drum cleaned up, but is getting pitted.

Possibly. As a general rule, if you are going to work on Postwar Lionel Trains, you need to seriously familiarize yourself with the very large and very useful Olsens Toy Train Parts website, only one page of which is  linked to below. Always provide the Lionel loco or car number  for faster and better answers here on this forum.

In this case, however, the link below may not provide exactly what you need. The electro-mechanical e-units were basically the same, often differing only in the position, length and shape of the lever; that is, up, down, straight, bent ,curved, etc. Many designs are no longer available, per se, but you can usually find one with a lever that you can bend a bit, if necessary. Any good online parts vendor can advise you: Olsen's, Mizell, Brasseurs, the Train Tender, to name just a few.

Another,  with as large a selection of e-units in his catalog is as I have seen lately, is Charles F. Schmitt, 410-974-4736, weekdays, after 9 AM and before 9 PM eastern time please. No online ordering. I don't know what he actually has in stock, but he knows a great deal and is a very nice guy to work with.

Note: E-units are getting scarce. Some dealers will require you to send them your own in "re-buildable condition" before they will send you a replacement. You can also get e-unit sub-parts and re-build your own, but it's not all that easy unless you have three hands.
