I enjoy running longer trains (10-20 cars) and therefore am always interested in the pulling power of my locomotives or prospective new purchases. I always read the new product reviews in each issue of CTT where they list the drawbar pull of locomotives. Oftentimes there is a statement about how well a locomotive pulls a mixed consist of new and vintage rolling stock. I was wondering if anyone has put together a chart of average drag characteristics or drawbar pull needed to pull various types of cars. Everyone knows postwar cars even when well lubricated offer more drag than modern cars with plastic trucks and fast angle wheels. When looking for a locomotive that can pull seven diecast 2 bay K-line hoppers, it would be helpful if I could calculate an estimate of the drawbar pull needed to run them. On a related topic, has anyone pulled together a list of estimated drawbar pull for various locomotives. I understand lots of variables can come into play, but if you used clean level track as a standard, I think somewhat reliable average values could be obtained.
