I received a Lionel P.R.R 8141 for Christmas around 1971-72. I am searching for any info. on this train set as in manufacturing dates, original manuals or anything else. This set came with the following:
8141 Steam Locomotive (242)
8141T Tender (not sure if # is correct)
9020 U.P flatcar
9142 Republic Steel gondola
9011 G.N 2-bay hopper
9062 P.C caboose
I also would like to know if original boxes are still available and what this set was called since the box is long gone. Any help would be great.
Thanks David Lee
Set Number 6-1183 "The Silver Star" Lionel 1971
"Lionel proudly introduces the "Mighty Sound of Steam" with the "Silver Star".
In addition to the engine and cars you list it had 12 curved track, 4 straight track, a 90 degree crossover, a 50 wat transformer, two figures (?), Machanical Uncoupler, lockon & wires.
You might find some of the boxes at a large train show (York PA), doubt if you could find a set box after 38 years.

Thanks for your help. Hope you had a great Christmas.
David
For Storage, Lionel licensed reproduction boxes are on the market. You would be looking for the early "MPC" type. MPC division of General Mills took over Lionel in 1970 until 1985.
Early MPC sets did not come with boxes for the cars or engine. They were in one foam container or a seperate open foam container for each piece. However most cars were also sold seperate, boxed, so you may find some that way.
