My wife bought me a Blue Comet engine, #8801 (6-8801), that features the Mighty Sound of Steam. Surprisingly, the Mighty Sound of Steam works great. I seem to recall there was some issues where some insulation would deteriorate causing the sound board to short out and fail but I don't know where the insulation is located. There was some old pieces of foam that might have come from the tender in the box.
Are there any precautions I should take to prevent Mighty Sound of Steam sound board failure?

Earl, you may have answered your own question. As I recall, the Sound of Steam boads were attached to the metal floor of the tender with foam tape. As the foam got old, it crumbled and frequently permitted the wire- and component-ends to short out, as the foam acted as insulation.
Get the board out, taking all the usual precautions against static-electricity fro handling, and replace it before it's too late.

Thank you for your reply. I opened up the tender and the foam was pretty much deteriorated. The Mighty Sound of Steam board was floating loose. I cut out a piece of cardboard and covered the tender bottom, so it shouldn't short out now. I think the Mighty Sound of Steam chuff sounds pretty good.
