MTH Locomotives
Posted by mlachap925 on Thursday, December 24, 2009 9:45 AM

I am looking at possibly purchasing some MTH Premier diesel locomotives.  Can anyone that is running these give me some feedback?  I am running Atlas 21st Century track and my power is currently Lionel TMCC.

Atlas Track will be OK as long as the locos can navigate through the curves. A lot of Premier locos require 042 to 072 curves depending on the loco.

To get all the features of a PS-2 loco you will need MTH DCS. I run my layout with 5 Lionel 135 watt bricks connected to a MTH TIU and a Lionel TMCC Command Base. This way I can run all my TMCC locos with the DCS controller or use the TMCC controller to operate just the Lionel TMCC equipped locos. By switching the TIU from fixed to varible output I can also run my conventional locos through the DCS controller.

Just a cautionary word on the MTH engines, PS-2 is great whereas PS-1 is kinda a love/hate relationship with regard to batteries.

If you are already running TMCC you could add a TPC to your system to give you great operational control of almost all the PS-2 functions by your Cab-1 w/o adding an additional operating system, but they do work better under DCS. Also worth noting is that PS-2 does not operate well with all power supplies.
