NYC engine ?
Posted by traindaddy1 on Wednesday, December 23, 2009 2:34 PM

We have a loop that has a passenger five car consist. (Three NYC Flyer expansion pack set plus the vista dome and the baggage cars.) The train, at the present time, is pulled by a RMT NYC Beep.

While we like the Beep, we would like to have more power.

There are two choices.  Obtain another Beep, if we can locate one, and have two engines running OR replace it with either a steam or diesel that would compliment the style.

Thinking of Traditional (no fancy bells and/or frills) Lionel, what would you suggest?   The other loops are Traditional Postwar but this one need not be.  As always, many thanks.

Well a Lionel lines 4-4-2 would be nice and it should have plenty of power to pull all the cars you have. Or the 0-8-0 switcher. I know this is not Lionel but Atlas makes a nice little 4-4-2 Atlantic that has a great puffing smoke unit and great pulling power (can pull over 20 cars). Well thats about all I can come up with. Oh and theres also the docksider switcher and the 0-4-0 switcher from Lionel all are traditional basic steamers. Hope this helps. Oh and one thing about the Atlas O Atlantic, ive heard it can have trouble running through tight 0-27 or 0-31 curves, I could be wrong about this though. Hope this helps you!

I have one of the basic Lionel 4-4-2 steam locomotives in NYC markings.  Good smoker, pulls 10 cars, pretty common on e-bay too.

Something like this might fill your need.

There is also a Railsounds tender available that would work nicely with this locomotive.

How about the best known NYC passenger power ever built? The HUDSON!!!

I think that Lionel's Hudson jr #6-38634, would definitely be worth a look. MSRP is $199.99. Trainworld has advertizd them for $167.99. Basic Trainsounds sound system and smoke unit, no fancy command system.

Go with the NYC.  I have mine and still break it out on the main line to pull about 10-15 cars with no problems.

Enjoy,
