Legacy under TMCC control
Posted by jmkk on Sunday, December 20, 2009 11:43 AM

Just purchased a used Legacy GP30 (Chesssie 3044). Looks unrun (no markings on the wheels or pickups). Just some flat spots on the traction tires from what looks like some shelf time. There was no instruction manual with it. My question is what Legacy functions will I not be able to utilize under TMCC control? Unfortunately I have to wait till Christmas to see how it runs. I will be getting Legacy but not until tax return time. Also if anybody has a lead on a Chessie 3045 (non powered) let me know.

Jason,
I know you won't get the variable horn, variable bell, and your speed control will not be as refined.

I haven't found a 3045 to go with mine either. I have seen it mated with the 3044 for sale but not seperate. I've been thinking of picking up a second 3044 and renumbering it... Whistling

Thanks for the reply Brent. I think I will be looking for a second 3044 also to be renumbered. I wouldn't mind finding the GP30 from the Chessie freight set either. Well lets put it this way anything Chessie made by Lionel or Atlas I'm up for.

Brent is right.  We all ran the UP Big Boy under TMCC until Lionel came out with the Legacy.  Just sounds better and better fine tuned control with Legacy.

Thanks for the reply Cheif. Thats kinda what I figured. I guess I just needed to hear it from you guys. Now I really cant wait to get Legacy. Maybe I can Get the wife to hold off on getting a new couch until tax return time. Then I can get Legacy sooner. On second thought if I proposed that I would be sleeping on the couch!

I know they aren't quite as detailed and the graphics mite not be exactly the same but what about a Williams GP-38 dummy. On my Lionel RI GP-7's I have a Williams GP-9 dummy that I run in between the two powered units.

Just a thought, and very economical. Approve

Forgot to add that they come with p/u rollers and lights so it would be fairly easy and reasonable, cost wise, to add sound and directional lighting with an upgrade from ERR.

Good idea. I will have to compare a Williams Chessie GP30 next to the Lionel Chessie GP30. Now I just need to find one to compare. Is there anybody out there that can do this for me and post a pic.

Here's a link to the Williams by Bachmann catalog:

http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/products.php?act=viewProd&productId=2347

The only thing is that these are the "Traditional Line" as opposed to the "Golden Memory Line". If the Lionel GP-30's are scale sized the Williams GP-38's will appear undersized.
