Is it just me or has anyone else run across this. I have recently started buying trains from Ebay. When I have recieved a couple of the orders and open the boxes it smells like someone has emptied a cigarette ash tray into the box. One of the first things I do after checking to see if item is ok and runs good, it is to the sink and give it a good bath. Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this. A non-smoker.
Never noticed but did have a package from ebay that the person must of had a dog or cat cause my pooch would not stop nosing the box. She finally got on my nerves took the train and popcorn out and gave her the box.
This has happened to me many times. It's just outwardly gross.
My findings are reflected by factual comments in the feedback(sometimes neutral) like "As described, but VERY STRONG CIGARETTE SMOKE ODOR / RESIDUE in item & all packaging"...

I know exactly what your talking about. Its especially bad when its a food prep item or something used to cook with. Some rolling stock i go from a guy off of ebay smelled so much of smoke the boxes where yellowish. I wonder if itll cut down on the value. I usually mention something in the comments of feedback if its really bad
That's strange. Most of my train purchases smell like old cigars.

Sure that isn't also mold from the packaging/storage, and rancid smoke fluid oil?
I know when I was a smoker I thought that 'smoke smell' was nonsense; you don't notice it as a smoker. I quit in 1982 because $0.75/pack was too much to pay in a machine Guess I'm just cheap.
Maybe that's still the case; smoker's don't realize how the smoke infects everything. I bought an automatic milk car that required cleaning, but came out fine. If it really bothers you, you could ask the seller before bidding.
