Pulling power question
Posted by SamW on Sunday, December 13, 2009 10:25 AM

I now have more cars than the 4-4-2 that came with the original set can pull. Mainly because of the operating cars.

I have 2 possibbilities at good prices and was wondering about the pulling power of each loco

1. K-Line Pacific

2. Lionel Mikado

Thanks ahead of time for the feed back

Are you asking about the Lionel Mikado jr(usually $250-300), or the SCALE size Mikado(usually$6-700)?

I have a K-Line Pacific (similar to the one you are looking at??) and a couple of Lionel Mikado jr's, they both pull very well. The K-Line Pacific smokes a bit more than the Mikado jr. The Mikado jr has a bit better detailing, the Pacific is still a great looking locomotive though. Another consideration would be warranty service and parts availabilty. K-Line is out of business so future parts availabilty is questionable, and warranty service for new, old stock locomotive is not available. I have not had any trouble with my K-Line Pacific. The Lionel Mikado jr is still in production currently, so parts and service should not be an issue.

I like and have both and would reccomend either, the Mikado jr would be MY choice of the two, IF, I could only have one of the two.

 Thanks Doug,

Got the K-line pacific and it runs like a swiss watch. Probably one of the quietest locos I've ever seen. Pulls great too.

Turns out this is the same model of pacific that lionel sells under the K-line by lionel name, so parts should be available for a while.

SamW,

You're Welcome, Her is a pic showing my K Line Pacific, and my K Line passenger cars, I forgot to put the K Line Porters, Plymouth and MP 15 in with these. The Pacific would pull those Heavyweight cars just fine, but I usually pull some two tone grey Williams cars (14"??) behind it, with the Kline heavyweights behind one of my two tone grey Lionel LionMaster Challngers. The Sreamlined cars were used behind my 2 tone grey Legacy FEF 3, before I got the Lionel scale streamliners. I would like to get an E8/9 Diesel set to pull the K Line stramlind cars eventually. The streamlined diner, left side, second row from the top actually is Lionel and not from the K Line collection.

My K Line Pacific has been a Wonderful runner, I am sure that you will enjoy your new locomotive very much.
