No, I haven't tried my hand at operating a real train.

Yes, as a kid, in fact

1. Went for a joy ride on a "borrowed" handcar
2. Snuck into the engine shed and made believe I was driving the S-2 FJ&G diesel
3. Hopped some freights

When I was 16 I really wanted to get my driver's license. Not to drive a car, but to drive the Minnesota Transportation Museum's 1909 vintage streetcar. Very cool, but scary. A lot of resposnibility, and a little un-nerving.

About 15 years ago, again with the MTM, I had the opportunity to try my hand at a real train with 3 passenger cars behind. I think I'll stick to MS train simulator.[swg]

Let's see,

An SW-1200 and an F-7 on short passenger trains.
Speeder cars over the last 15 years.
My 9 1/2 ton Frick traction engine.
Two 15" gauge steamers.
Several 7 1/2" gauge live steamers , including mine .
Maybe the 765 if I can get Rich drunk enough???[:D]

When I was a kid I hopped a freight train. I've never driven a real train. I think TRAINS should do an interview with Bruce Carpenter who lists the hobby of "operating restored railroad speeders". I sent him a letter care of Tony Koester but never got a reply. I want to know if he drives them on the tracks and how he gets away with that.

Speeders are a hobby unto themselves. There are groups of speeder owners that get together and run the rails and camp out. They make arrangements and get permission and go. Sounds cool. I wish I could remember where I saw that story.
