What would fry the board on a #455 oil derrick?

I hooked up the oil derrick on my layout and it worked for a week or so while I was running trains (maybe 30 mins or so each day).  Last night when I turned it on it smoked and the insulation on the wire leading from the circuit board to the coil assembly burned up.  Do boards just give out spontaneously?  I may have readjusted the source voltage but I'm not sure.  Can a board be damaged by too much voltage as well as too little voltage
