difference in "O" brands

Just back into tinplate in last 2 years, as a activity with teenage son. Armchair HO form 25+ years. Atlas track got me really going with a layout8x13 with a 4x24 leg with 20+ turnouts. Have been unable to find much on difference in brands.Some reviews have some information, but apparently one or two factories in China make everything. What the difference other then brand name and price. Want to get quality equipment that looks scale. OK so none of it is really scale based on guage but still have HO mentality. Have Williams E's which I love and a Weaver RS. Have MTH passenger cars. Like them all but when I mention anything but Lionel in the local shops they tell me I am crazy. Most local dealers are Lionel with a small amount of Atlas and K-line
