Dave:

Sorry to disillusion you, but you're wrong about there being no escalators or elevators in the NY subway system. Grand Central Station alone has both.

The subway really has come a long way since the fare was $0.15!!

The city recently refurbished all the stations in Manhattan on the 4 & 5 line (don't know about the others since I didn't ride them). It's still hotter than H-E-Double Hockey Sticks in the summer on the subway platforms, though.

Interesting bit of NYC subway trivia: there are no ventilation fans in the subway tunnels. The system relies upon the movement of trains pushing air in front of them to deliver fresh air to the tunnels.

I think they should install ventilation fans at the stations, just to make it tolerable in the summer.

Congratulations Dave on the 4th star.

It looks like Big Boy will soon have his 5th star.

daan,

Just be glad you don't have rats AND termites! :-)

Must be hard to find a babysitter for all those animals when you go on vacation.

My beagle gets carsick so I never go anywhere.

Shame about NY tokens being no more. I think that New York's Subways are the only subway or light rail in the country that doesn't have elevators or escalators. Surprised they haven't got sued yet for ADA violations.

Regarding the NYC Subway, the last token turnstile was removed from the system just this past spring. The system no longer accepts tokens.

Now they have something they call "MetroCard," which I've actually used. It's a thin plastic card (Thinner than a credit card) with a magnetic stripe on one side. You put cash on it & swipe as you go through the turnstile. It's actually a lot faster than tokens were and it's supposed to give the MTA the option of changing their rate structure. For example, instead of being able to go anywhere on the system for one fixed fare, the fare would depend upon where you get on & where you get off.

They haven't done that yet, though.

Actually Dave, St Paul is getting nothing. The light rail line is all on the Minneapolis side of the river. It will run from the Mall of America, through the airport and up to Downtown Minneapolis.

It took a lot of doing to convince lawmakers to build this line. This may be the greatest legacy of the Ventura administration. It was supposed to be open already, but a transit worker's strike lasting over a month has delayed that opening.

If I'm not mistaken, June 1st will mark the 50th anniversary of the demise of the Twin Cities streetcar system. Wouldn't it be ironic to open on that day???

Thanks, guys; eZak, I was a gunny so I worked for a living.

Still recall the tokens on the NY Subways; 15 cents, I believe, long time ago.

I think post 1000 was over at the MR forum; I was razzing them in an HO vs. N scale post (I didn't create that post). At first, didn't even notice 1000 until I clicked back in to see some responses. N scale, by the way, seemed to win out. I think that my advice to the poster was to go N scale since he could fit in a lot more track, structures, scenery, and run longer trains; and, besides, I said, HO and N to me are equally difficult to see.

Advised to elevate the layout to eye- or near-eye level, so that the N scale trains would appear bigger, but to avoid sneezing (for obvious reasons).

I read on MR forum that St. Paul will be getting a new light rail line. Congrats, Elliot.

I see that MartyE still has his husky. So on this forum we now have a husky, a parrot named Spanky who hangs out on a perch overlooking a toy train layout; a turtle, who actually lives in a real pond on a layout; a few cats; and my beagle and 3 love birds.

A real menagerie.

Way to go Dave, sorry I missed the actual post. This is what happens when you get really active on multiple forums.

I would like to encourage everyone reading this to visit MR, Trains Magazine and Garden Railways. There is a lot of information and fun to be had, and even more people to meet beyond our little corner of cyberspace.[swg]

If I'm not mistaken, Sask will be the next to join the 4 star ranks.[;)]
