Newby success !!!
Posted by Boonter on Sunday, May 9, 2004 6:46 PM
I recently asked for advise on cleaning an old loco, which was given. MANY thanks to all.
I can report SUCESS. This old crate, a 1666, now whips around my temporary test track like a new one. I discovered a ton of gunk, a couple of missing screws, replaced with WOOD Screws, and one broken truck. I will replace the truck soon, and do a more complete cosmetic job. For now, I'm one happy fella.
Cheers & Talleyho !

I'll give you an ataboy, even though everyone else was asleep!

Finding handy replacement screws is the hardest thing for me!
I've used self- threading machine screws on occasion.

Way to go, Boonter. I enjoy getting the old stuff to run, and have said more than once, "where else can you find 50-year-old toys that still run like they were intended to?" I haven't bought any of the new elegant locomotives now available (too expensive!), but I think I find more satisfaction in getting an old piece working again.

Alright, Boonter!

That's one of the great (and fun!) aspects of this hobby - rehabilitating old equipment and getting it to run. Gives you a great sense of accomplishment!

Agree w/Dr. John, lots of satisfaction from rehabing yourself as well as your equipment!

i've had some success re and RE-building some older postwar locos until i find the "secret" to make it start and run smooth and quietly. it can be really frustrating work but if i/you can stay with it it feels really good to see them run again, better than before.

good 4 you [;)]

That's the fun part for me 2. Mostly I can only get hands of older engines and they need a bit of TLC most of the time. Having those old giants back on track and running is great! (Now I'm only waiting on some new trackwork I ordered, then I can finish my trackplan and attatch some extra powerlines; the engines don't run equally in speed across my layout due to some bad railjoints..)
