Not entirely true.

Lionel describes how to power O-27(1122/1122E/5122 types) by accessory power HERE.

It was written for use in Command environments, but the info & method are pertinent and apply directly to your question.

 Yes and no!

True, they were made this way, But if you want to get involved you can make them work from a sepparate power source.

The solenoid is wired to the center rail. This is what needs to change.

Greetings,

Ok, I think I found some good info on how to test these switches, but the little I found said these can not be wired for anything other then track power. Is this true?
