Diesel
I have some steam and like it too but Diesel is my fav
STEAM!!! but I do love those postwar diesels too.
"No childhood should be without a train!"
steam ..steam..steam..steam..steam..STEAM
steam with a smattering of early diesel that would have been seen in my part of the country.
Steam is romantic, exotic. But regrettably, Lionel's can't be double headed without much modification.
Diesels from the 50's, well represented by stylish F3s are also nostalgic (and in Lionel postwar guise are great runners). They appeal to me in the same way as cars from the 50's.
But an electric, running on cantenary, particularly if it's a GG1, is romantic, exotic, and futuristic. Cantenary light rail commuters are a close second. Maybe it's because I saw a cantenary operated GG1 on a relative's layout when I was around 10.
Steam all the way!!
STEAM ............. but I am shopping for a huge diesel .....
Steam! I love watching the linkage! Listening to all the various steam engines on video just peaks my interest!

For looks: Steam, Looks nice on the layout.
Pulling Power: Diesel, Dual motors are nice to have.
Selling Value: Electric, I only say this because I had a 2340 Congressional Set that I sold, and all I got in return was lots of $$$$. lol.
Steam is king. Just so much to watch on a steamer.

im pretty sure that General Electric, the Pennsy RR and others would take exception to that comment about no modern electrics till 1940. Some GE electrics remained in continous service for over nearly eight decades, something no steam or diesel has ever done.
I do love the steam engines, but it drives me crazy watching them circle the layout, smoking up a storm, chuffing like crazy pulling thier consists, all the while with the valve gear stuck fimly in neutral...also furthest from realistic, the steam motivation being replaced with an electric motor.
Diesels are fun too, closer in realism to the extent that the axles are driven by electric motors.
That leaves the electrics with thier prototypical operation, drawing power from, wait for it...the third rail or even a catenary system.
Im guessing this will be the lone vote for electrics, LOL
SUPERHEATERED STEAM
Works well with the diesel era too.
Hello Bryan!
I enjoy steam also & imagine that their popularity outnumbers Diesels two to one! So, Steam it is! Take Care.
Steam, but I do like the new Lionel Legacy Diesels too.

Since there has been an epidemic of thread polls on this forum, I thought I would start my own. So, what do you prefer, steam, diesel, or electric locomotives? Yes I know ALL of them are electric powered!!! It doesn't matter wether they are prewar, postwar, or modern either, well, we might best keep it modern made to make it an even playing field since real diesels or electrics didn't come about until in the 1940's or so. I know it's the MILLION dollar question. Please keep your answers in larger size please. Well, I am going to put my answer in........
STEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Give me steam locomotives or give me DEATH!
