Veddy interesting!  Thankee!  The challenge here, though, is setting up a delay, which the relays won't do.

I sort of envision something called "The Blocker" or something like that.  It'd look sorta like a 153 with a relay and timer in the base.  Ya hook it up, and when it's tripped, it stops the previous block for a few seconds.  Be sorta like a TAD blended with a block signal, and could be activated by an IR sensor, track switch or insulated section...

Check out www.scottsodds-n-ends.com.  I bought the DPDT relay.  For my layout, I insulated three sections of 027 track.  Mine starts the  train in the isolated block and turns the 153 from red to green.

You can reverse the setup if you want the isolated blocked normally closed (NC) instead of normally open (NO).  Also, you can insulate as much track as you need.

These relays are designed for use on electric train layouts.  I hope to have video of mine up before too long now.

Good luck,

Charlie

Block Delay System for Trolley Layout?
Posted by marmelmm on Friday, February 6, 2009 6:36 AM

(Brief recap:  Putting together a traveling trolley layout with O27 track and quasi-automatic block control using either Lionel 153C or MTH 1037 track switches)

Been noodling about with a 153C while I'm waiting for a 1037 to show up, and one thing which may cause problems is the momentary nature of the track switch.  This isn't a problem with a regular train, but with a single unit train (i.e. a trolley), the switch doesn't stay down long enough to really protect a following block (by killing the power to it).  Is there a unit out there which combines the adjustable delay of the MTH IR TAD with a mechanical instead of IR sensor?
