What is kit bashing?

It may be a dumb question, but I was wondering what the term kit bashing means. Thanks

I'm pretty sure it means to take several different kits, or several of the same kit, and make either a completly new object out of it, or make the one kit bigger. For example, taking a kit that is a motel, buy two or three of them, stack them on top of each other and make a three story hotel.

At least that is my interpretation of 'kit bashing'

Kitbashing means you get to throw out the directions and rearrange the parts. Any spare parts not used in one kit become material used on another kit to get the effect you want.
In the bad old days of Nscale, it meant that you could swap parts of models. A GP7 came with dynamic brakes & a GP9 came without. So you get to cut up the long hood, and swap parts for the model.

The current (May) issue of Classic Toy Trains has a good example of kitbashing:

"JUMBO PLASTICVILLE STATION

Richard van de Kieft details how to make a grand city station from three Union Station kits and one bank building kit."

There's a lot of cutting of plastic parts and addition of some foam core walls, and the result is a much more impressive train station.

Railroad Model Craftsman runs a monthly kitbashing contest - mostly HO scale, but it could give you some ideas.
Enjoy
