The MTH TAD is far superior to the 153C contactor. Not surprising, since it was developed 10 years (or so) ago, and the 153C was developed in the late '30s.
I have two of the TADs and one 153C on my holiday layout; I adjusted the TADs when I installed them, and haven't had to do anything to them since then. The 153C contactor has needed repeated adjustments over the months, and at its best it doesn't work as well -- there's a brief (one-or two-second) "dark time" between the red and green lights which I haven't been able to eliminate.
Two of mine came with MTH signals (153 and 151 repros); I bought several more on eBay. (I can't find most of them, which is why I'm using the 153C.) I don't even know if they still make them or not, but right now (4 PM EST Friday) there are four offered on eBay.
UPDATE: The MTH product locator suggests that 29 stores have them in stock. (# 10-1037)

Thanks for the input, all! Based on what I've read, I'm gonna go with mechanical switches to do the blocks. Now, which is better: The Lionel 153C or the MTH MT-1037? And what are good sources for each? I know Train Tender has 153Cs in stock, but what about the 1037?
Thanks!
