As Rob says, this will work. I was using one on my layout at one time.
kadarsCan the switch motors from postwar 022 switches be used on postwar 042 switches?
Can the switch motors from postwar 022 switches be used on postwar 042 switches?
Yes.
kadarsIf so, does the non-derailing function work as well?
No.
kadars I've acquired a few 042 switches and wondered if I could make the conversion from some old 022's I am not using. Thought I'd ask before ripping something apart.
Lionel made a 022A switch in 1947 that was stripped down but the non-derailing function was retained... your method would keep the fixed voltage option available(the 022A didn't have it) but the 042's don't have the control rails or electric layout for the non-derailing function.
You could make your own insulated control rail track sections adjacent to the through & out paths for the non-derailing feature to work.
