What cars fit on Lionel O27 auto carriers?
Posted by SchemerBob on Sunday, January 25, 2009 10:15 AM

Yesterday I purchased Lionel's Conrail 2-tier auto carrier from Hobby Lobby, and I'm wondering what scale cars fit on it. I have mostly 1:43 cars, and they work on the top level but are too wide to fit in the lower level. I have some smaller cars, but they're just slightly bigger than Matchbox and look kind of odd. What scale cars do you guys put in yours? Does 1:50 work? Thanks.

The 1/64 scale variety is probably best suited since the Lionel "traditional line" models are scaled down a bit. Scale auto racks are monsters in comparison.

77 VW Rabbits make a great load for the auto racks.  They come in various shades, and really look at home inside the open racks.  Also, wileys jeeps are good too.

Couldn't resist.  Here's a couple of pics of C&O 9126 (BLT 2-73) and PC 9139 (BLT 1-76).  The Rabbits fit snug inside the open racks.

And here is C&O 9123 (BLT 1-73) with 8 jeeps.

I've always thought that the open auto racks made more interesting loads, then their modern enclosed counterparts.  Morning Sun books publishes color guides to most fallen flags, and I got my inspiration for the auto loads there.  The lionel auto racks can be a bit wobbly, but with these VWs and Jeeps, the cars become very stable, track well, and I can back the entire train through a maze of switches without mayhem.

Fifedog, those VW's look great! What brand/scale are they? They look like a perfect fit.

I thought they were from MAISTO (spelling), but they aren't labelled on their frames.  I do know that they are marketed by several different firms, the most notable was K-Line.  So keep your eyes peeled at train shows for those black and yellow boxes.

Fife those are out of this world great looking I was going to ask then saw you answered about being wobbly as I had a NS I think might have been N&W but anyway got rid of it as it was so wobbly ( and Lite) I could hardly pull other cars behind it and go around curves.

you have given me new hope I think the cars by newray (American Classics also fit well they say there 1:43 but I think there actually smaller. I bought a bunch from Dollar General a year ago on sale for $1.00 each normally $2.00 each. and if you look at the K-Line Corvette flat ( one with 3) these are exact duplicates except on flat vets tires are a little wider than what these have.

Up loading some comparison pics now to photo bucket will add here. Not sure how well they'll fit but they might.

sorry pics aren't the best will try again later on the run right now

dwiemer - The license agreement is with Hongwell Toys Limited, thru KLine as part of their KLine Kruisers line.  I know I've seen them offered in other packaging, and I'm pretty sure I've even seen them at Wal Mart (check out the Forces of Valour area).  At YORk, a vendor had a few crates of them at 3 bucks a pop!

rt - The inside width of the MDC era open racks is 1 1/2".  Not sure those vettes are ideal.

These are neat - I'll bet the added weight from these cars make those auto-carriers track better too.  I wonder how heavy they end up being.

Fifedog, your layout is so well done I missed one technicality. Your Rabbits are running in reverse.

3railguy - Thanks for the props.  They're more wascully dat way...

cnw1995 -  Ya know, I don't think one of those loaded auto racks is half as heavy as one of those ill-fated diecast hoppers...

The dimensions of the Lionel  Open-Frame Auto Carriers is about the same width as 1:64th scale automobiles. Look for old brands like Matchbox and new brands like New-Ray.

I thought of someday buying a few packages of 1:64th scale autos at K-Mart and Wal-Mart for those types of Lionel Open-Frame Auto Carriers. After I finished with wiring all the track proplerly.

Since I last posted about 2 years ago, I have bought several Hot Wheels and some Matchbox automobiles to put in the MPC / LIONEL O Gauge Open Auto Carriers.

This is one of a couple of videos that I quickly made of loaded auto carriers.
