LOL I THINK I WAS JUST GETTING ALITTLE *** OFF JUST THINKING ABOUT THAT TIME WHEN I WAS POSTING THIS AND I THINK ANY ONE WOULD HAVE TOO
WOW! You should really break that up into paragraphs, it's almost impossible to read an amorphous blob of text like that!
i was thinking of getting the pwz #2545ws set thay are nice and the 5.0 railsounds i think sounds great thats why i wanted one more n&w 746 set in my collection i already have the postwar #2545ws set from 1959 with the #175 space staion and i think its one of lionels best looking & made train set from the postwar i use JT'S mega steam sented smoke fluid and i add a full tube of fluid in the smoke unit and thats got to be at lease 25 to 35 drops it smokes without any issues and its the same way with all my postwar lionel sets with smoke units if you guys would like to see all my lionel sets grizzleybearz282004 is my youtube name i do have a few of lionel newer sets but there realy for my kids the prewar and postwar lionel train sets are mine but back to the pwc 2545ws set it is nice and i do want one but i have a big issue with these sets today now being made in china and that we are paying top doller for these sets with half the pride when there being made in march of 2007 i move out on my own from my fathers and got a home with my girlfriend and my alittle girl was almost 2 years old and that comeing christmas we got our first lionel train set for our new home to have under the christmas tree it was the highly liked #1225 bearkshire polar express set the dealer was asking $349,99 and i got him down to $270.00 with tax i didnt have it 3 weeks and the smoke unit whent and it wouldnt run unless i turned the smoke unit off so i took it back to the dealer and he says its got to be shiped to lionel for repair and it could take a while before i get it back so i started to get alittle mad now remember i dont even have this set 30 days yet i dont think i sould have to wait at all he sould have fixed it there or just gave me another #1225 2-8-4 berkshire engine and thats it right! he had alot of them in the store the sets and he had just the engines with the tender up for sale and thats when i seen how lionels service sucks i didnt get that engine back untill over 4 months later and the whole time i was calling to check up on it i had my repair and docket number and i would ether get no one on the phone or thay would put you on hole and never get back on to tell me whats going on with it beleave me i was *** off at that point and thats why i havent put up $1,200 for the pwc #2545 lionel set and i love my prewar & postwar lionel sets i have learned alot about how to do repairs on these sets since then i will not pay a lionel dealer repair center to do repairs for me and thats one more thing when why didnt thay just tell me to take it to one of there repair centers near me instead of it going back to china??? or ware ever thay sent it
I think too much smoke fluid in the chamber was the problem. I really haven't ran the engine that much to burn out the heating element. After running the engine for about 5 minutes today, the smoke unit started to work again. I ran it for about 20 more mintues and the thick smoke never stopped. Later this evening when I ran the engine again, the smoke unit wouldn't work. I let the engine idle for a while and ran it for a few minutes more and it began to smoke again. After shutting the engine down for about 15 minutes, I restarted it and the smoke unit is working fine. All this running time today and I've never had to put a drop of smoke fluid in the chamber. Yet it continued to puff heavy smoke. Just as the Chief said, maybe I just put way too much smoke fluid in the unit and it was running too cool to heat things up. Anyway, thanks for all your help.

If you have run it a lot, JMKK is probably right. Burnt wicking will stick to the element and thus cut back on the smoke. Got to try JMKK's wicking. Think that might be an answer to preventing charring.

Wonder if the wicking is burnt. I had one do something similar. Boost would give it enough extra heat to smoke here and there. This same engine would smoke on and off. I took the Chief's advice pulled smoke unit apart repacked with common pink house insulation (now I use Tiki Torch wick). Also his advice I flood 10-12 drops after initial 15 when first repacked to keep it wet and I do not use the boost button any more. I find it tends to burn the wicking.

Thanks ChiefEagles. Maybe there is too much fluid in the chamber, I'm not sure. I'll check the ground connection also, but whenever I push the smoke boost button, I can hear the fan motor turning. Does the fan and heating element of the smoke unit share the same ground?
Too much liquid????? Has to burn it out so it has to get hot for some time???? Poor wiring connection???? A few guesses. I had a "starter" engine that was "hit and miss" with smoking. Found the "ground" or common needed resoldering.
The smoke unit on my Lionel PWC 746 stops working and when it seems like there is nothing I can do to get it working again, it starts working all by itself. After shutting down the engine and restarting it, the smoke unit again stops operating and then after a period of time, it starts working again. Anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this problem or how to fix it?
