I own a MTH Z-1000 also. After looking mine over I am inclined to believe you may have a bad reostat which is the control knob base. Must be shorted across inside. Ask over on the OGR forum. There are a few crack MTH guys there.

I have a MTH z1000 that gives out 19 volts even when the controller is turn off.  I am unable to control the speed of the engine.  Any ideas how I can fix the problem?
