I recently purchased a Postwar Lionel 6024 "Whirlpool" Boxcar. In the David Doyle catalog it states that this car was part of an uncataloged set offered only in 1957. Does anyone have information on the trainset and what engine and other cars were part of it?
OK, so it only takes two years to get an answer:
I recently found out about this set quite by accident, in fact, I bought one!
The set comes in a low basket weave box, and unfortunately the individual components weren't boxed- The basket weave boxes were, apparently the earliest examples of them not including component boxes.
I say unfortunate, because the set comes with a single 204 SF (blue/yellow) Alco A unit, and if you check the guides, they show that the 204s (always) came as a pair of A units, so there's no way to differentiate one sold singly from the majority sold as pairs.
While the Whirlpool car is a good car, it's not exceedingly rare, so either there were a lot of these sets, or the book is mistaken.
The other elements of the set were 6112 blue gondola with LCL containers, and a yellow lione lines flat car with pipes, nothing special.
The last element in the set is a 6017 caboose. It may just be the luck of the draw, but I got a very rare glossy tuscan one with my set.
There are two things to support my claim that the single 204 is correct: First, the set I got was in very good to excellent condition, and all the elements fit perfectly in the box. It also came from a civilians, not dealers or collectors, so I don't think a set in this good shape would be totally missing a dummy loco.
Secondly, I've seen the set on LiveAuctioneers.com and it contained the same elements- including a single 204 loco.
In closing, I don't know if you're familiar with the book about Uncatalogued Sets by Project Roar Publishing, but it's a remarkable resource. Unfortunately it starts at 1960 and doesn't include this set. If you have interest in uncatalogued sets, tho... this is an education in it's self.

The set is shown in Greenburg's Guide to Lionel Trains, 1945-1969. The set was offered in 1957 and contained the following: 204 Santa Fe A unit, 6024 RCA Whirlpool Car, 6111 Flatcar with logs, 6112 Blue Gondola with cannisters, 6017 SP-type caboose, 8 curved, 3 straight, 6029 Remote Control section, and a 1015 transformer.
The price guide lists it's value at $250 in VG condition and $500 like new.
When you say that you are quoting from Greenberg's price guide you must mean the large size copy, and not the pocket price guide as the pocket guide don't list any sets!

I was quoting from Greenburg's Guide to Lionel Trains, 1945-1969, Volume IV, Uncataloged sets.
It is the large size copy and contains only uncatalogued sets from 1945-1969.
