Personally, I'm all in favor of running things that have been used, but "virgins" are hard to find. In the hands of a person who loves and cares for trains, most pieces won't really get much wear cosmeticly speaking anyway. Mechanical wear really shouldn't enter into grading for value, according to TCA standards.

Oh, and the next time I run across a spare $10K, I'll buy a used car.[(-D][swg]

I'm glad that I missed it. Most people would have to mortgage the house to buy that set!!!! Just goes to show that the rich don't mind spending big bucks when they want something bad enough. I doubt if that set is worth anywhere near the $10,000 bid but nothing would surprise me in this hobby. When I first began collecting back in the late 70's a wise old man told me that he had observed that a train collector is like a "junkie in need of a fix". The longer that I'm in this hobby, the more I have seen proof of this. There is always the person that outspends everyone because he just has to have it-NOW However, I believe that the majority of collectors do seek out the good buys..

I'm with Gomez ! Trains are meant to be run. And run. And run. I've done more damage to my trains by "talking with my hands" (O27), or steping "over"(large scale), than I or any kids have by running, including running my Blue Boy's off the layout table at speed.

As to this thread's subject, I didn't miss when I wasn't shopping. Be happy TRAINing, FDM

That is the reason I chose this screen name. I've had some expensive engines crash or hit the floor over the last couple of years. I made a custom crossing for o gauge and standard gauge and one day I was running my lionel scale nyc mikado and one of my old lionel 10e. Well I wasn't quite paying too close of attention and they met at the crossing, the 10e "won" and knocked the mikado off the track and table. It busted it up a little and when I took it to the local shop for parts and repair, the guys at the store just shook their head. To make a long story short I have had some big engines hit the floor, lionel's new blue comet, K4, and 2 of the new berks. Believe it or not they all still work fine and there was minimal damage to the shells. My philosophy has been that these are toys(some are more expensive toys) and that I play with them with my kids, as with any toys they will get beat up a little. So be it.

I have thought about picking up some old beater engines and "convert" them into cra***est dummies where they "explode" when they hit head on.

Frankly, I love watching those old episodes, and have a tape with one of the many scenes. I always try to identify as many pieces as I can in the short time that they last. Those trains were no big deal back then, now we wish we had them.[:p]

Wow, I have that exact engine sitting on my layout right now and mine looks like it is in better shape than that one, especially the tender. My whistle works too!! Of course I don't have the cars to go along with it.
