I hope I'm not violating any rules of protocal on the Forum but can anyone help me locate a mint or in new condition Lionel #38047 Norfolk & Western 0-8-0 switcher which I believe was released about a year or so ago? I've been told these little steam switchers were and are still quite popular with toy train operators primarily due to their small size and ability to easily handle tight track radius. This might explain why they're so hard to come by on the secondary market.

I'd also like to hear from anyone who currently operates one of these switchers as to what they think of them and is the Lionel version worth paying more money for than the MTH version? I don't know where to get that engine, but I did see the NYC version run last week. The owner loves the engine.

I didn't study it, but what I saw looked very nice.

The engine is geared to run slow, which it does well. Also it has 4 chuffs per revolution, which is nice on a slow running engine. It negotiates switches well because the wheelbase is short for an 8 driver engine with the small drivers. There are operating couplers on both the front and rear.

If they offer it in the future in SF or UP, I'd buy one.
