Problem Solved.
When I bought the engine over the internet the guy said the Railsounds didnt really work. Well there was no battery and the volume control plug wasnt plugged in. It sounds great now that there is a battery and volume control. Thank you all for your help.

The others are right. Turning the end fan housing on top of the unit controls the volume. The Lionel website (www.lionel.com) has an exploded diagram and wiring diagram for your engine. Try the following link:

Right you are MartyE! The volume on this one is the third fan housing on the roof of the "B" unit. Turn it right, and it should get louder. If you run conventional, you'll need to instally a 9v transistor battery inside the shell.

Simply remove the mount screws underneath, install, and reassemble.

There is a volume control somewhere on the unit. A couple place to check are under neath the unit look for an opening with a small volume control.

Another place they could of hidden it is acting as one of the exhaust fans on the top. Trying turning them...one of them if the volume control will turn.

Hello,
I just recently purchased a set of Lionel Santa Fe F3's from 1996, 18128-29. The B Unit has the Railsounds, but it does not make any sound? I did not receive an owners manual so I don't know where to even start to fix it. It does make a very muted sound but it can barely be heard. Is there a volume or a battery, or is it because I am running the engines in conventional mode and not through TMCC?
Any help would be great.
