Lionel 6464-900 NYC w/Black Door
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 11, 2001 7:18 PM
I had purchased a Lionel 6464-900 NYC Boxcar with black doors. When I received the car, the body was only screwed on the frame on one side which leaves me to doubt if it is the correct frame for the car. The trucks are AAR Plastic with closed wheel journals with the knuckle having the plastic bar spring. I would like to know about what year the car was produced. If in the late 60's should it have the open journal trucks? Any history of it's production would be welcomed. Thanks.

I wanted to reply earlier but did not have a chance to research the question a little until tonight. There are several guide books by Greenberg and TM that can provide some insite to 6464 boxcars. However, the most extensive review of 6464 boxcars was published in CTT and was written by Joe Algozzini. It was a six part series starting in the June 1990 issue and continuing into the April 1991 issue. The 6464-900 cars were produced between 1960 and 1966 and are discussed in detail in Parts 5 and 6 (February and April 1991 issues of CTT).

Joe has an extensive 6464 collection including just about every variation and a lot of factory errors. I would recommend you look at Joe's analysis of the production in this period. The information should be very helpful in determining the history of your car.

Joe also worked with Tom McComas (TM Books and Videos) in the 90's producing segments on video and they produced several books written by Joe. I have Joe's book on Lionel F-3 production. I would not be surprised if they did not publish a book on the 6464 cars based on the series in CTT. You might try contacting TM Books and Videos.

I want to correct an error I made in the above post on this thread.

The book "Lionel's Postwar F3's", written by Joe Algozzini, was published by Kalmbach, not TM as I had indicated. The Kalmback Book Product # is 10-7950.

I am sorry for any confusion this may have created.
