hi..i'm new to this forum. just wondering if anyone here could help me....i have 2 train sets made by MARX toys, one is a passenger train with 2 engines and 2 cars.< only one engine has a motor in it. The second train is a freight train...it has a steam locomotive, a tender, 5 extra cars and 2 caboos'. could anybody tell me how to determine the collector value of these trains? thank you.[?]

Well, I can tell you what the values for your trains are. However, I will need some more information about them. If you could give a more detailed description about the trains I woudl be able to get somewhere. If you could list what each engine and car is, I'll be able to help you out.

hi.... Tinplater is asking you what the cars have written on them like names or numbers,
their colors, condition like scratches and breaks or chips, if they are made of metal or plastic, if there is an original box and the number on the box, hope this helps.......!

1. The passenger train engines has a red front and silver back with a little yellow on the front around the headlight area. It says Santa Fe on the side and the number on both engines are 1095. They are both older style, diesel type engines, and made of plastic. Only one has an electric motor in it. They are in good condition.
2. The first passenger car is silver, it has the viewing top, it has a light inside and people in the windows, it also says Santa Fe and the number on it is 3152. It is in fair to good condition.
3. The other passenger car is silver also, has the people in the window, lights up, says Santa Fe, and the number on it is 3197. I would say it is in fair to good condition. Both passenger cars are made of tin.
4. The freight train has a steam locomotive, it is a 4-6-4 wheel style, the body is made of plastic, the number is 1829, no name on it, it has a light in the front.
5. The tender is made of plastic, says Santa Fe on the front side, and the number is 2731.
6. The boxcar is red and tan, made of tin, it has Pacemaker Freight Service NYC, number 174580 on the left side, on the right side it has New York Central System, and is the same on both sides. It has a sliding door on each side, in good condition.
7. The next one I'm not sure what the name would be, but it's like a boxcar that is open on the top. It says C&O (Chesapeake & Ohio) number 44572, made of tin, in good condition.
8. Then the tanker car is plastic and has UTLX, number 284 on it. One of the couplers is broken on it. The rest of the car is in good condition though.
9. The coal car, made of plastic, has LE Hi Valley, and L.V. 21429 on the side.
10. The next boxcar is red, made of plastic, has R I on it, 147815. It has sliding doors on both sides, with one of the doors missing, and is otherwise in fair condition.
11. I have two cabooses, identical, both red, made of plastic. They have A. T.&S. F. on the side, number 4427, both in good condition.

I have no original boxes or packaging for these trains. Any info that you could help me with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

That's exactly what wanted to know. Well, the current values for your trains are as follows:
1095 Santa Fe E7 locomotives: $30 good, $50 excellent each (they are both worth the same because they were sold in pairs and neither is harder to find than the other)
3152 Dome Car (the viewing part is called a dome): If the dome runs only part way it is worth $20 good, $40 excellent and if the dome runs the entire length of the car it is worth $30 good, $50 excellent.
3197 Passenger Car: $20 good, $45 excellent
1829 4-6-4 Steam Locomotive: If it has a smoke unit it's worth $50 good, $85 excellent and if it doesn't smoke, it's worth $40 good, $60 excellent
2731 Santa Fe Tender: $20 good, $35 excellent
NYC Pacemaker Boxcar: If it has rivet details on the side it's worth $15 good, $25 excellent and if it has no rivet details it's worth $20 good, $30 excellent
C&O Gondola: $8 good, $15 excellent
UTLX Tank Car: $10 good, $20 excellent
LV Hopper Car: $15 good, $25 excellent
RI (meaning Rock Island): $15 good, $25 excellent
Cabooses: Bright red with black lettering is worth $10 good, $15 excellent and dark red with white lettering is worth $15 good, $25 excellent

Everything dates from the 1950's. The plastic cars are of the 8-wheel plastic variety of Marx cars and the tin cars are of the Marx 3/16" scale variety with high metal trucks (sets of wheels).
