Custom storage boxes for trains?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, February 22, 2004 11:50 AM
A few months ago I was at a website that made customized storage boxes with padded insulation (not repro cardboard boxes) for your engines and cars. Unfortunately I can't remember who it was. Does anyone have an idea about who does this?

Other than buying these from a thrid party, does anyone make their own storage boxes? I like a little protection for my older engines that don't have their original boxes and would like to either build some lightweight wooden boxes with foam padding cut to the shape of the engine or buy somethin a bit more sturdy than what I have now.

Might try buying the plastic "shoe boxes" they put on sale at craft stores and Ace. I get bubble wrap from the party store or my local "ship on site" and wrap them. Makes pretty good storage and they will stack on top of each other.

East Coast Train Parts offers a line of repro Lionel boxes for storing everything from locomotives and rolling stock to transformers and accessories. You can see some of their boxes at eastcoasttrainparts.com

Here is the site. I knew I could find it after a few more tries. It is probably not something you want to do for all yoru trains but it looks like a nice option for older cars that you want to protect for a long time. It is a customized solid box with foam inserts for diesels and steam, boxcars and the like. I need it for some old F3's I had that are too heavy to be well protected by the Lionel Repro cardboard boxes. Its very pricey, and I may be able to make something on my own for less.
