I agree with DMUinCT.  Cracks and breaks at the base of the boom seem to be the most frequent problems.

Can't add too much to what has been said, I do have one crane and two tenders...hope to get another crane sometime.  They are neat.  They did make a reissue in the JLC collector's series, I don't recall if it was the 4 or 6 wheel version though.  I have seen some of these go for less than $40.

A number of minor variations exist throughout the 2460's production period besides the major ones already mentioned.  Other than the early grey bodied version the remaining variations differ in truck, lettering and hand crank size and effect the going price little.  But it could be important to the collector trying to buy the exact crane to complete a set.  Interesting to note that the 1950 Advance Catalogue showed a 4460 crane car, supposedly to be offered in the Electronic Set.  It was never made.

The 2460 was produced between 1946 to 1950.

All Black, 6 wheel trucks, coil couplers, Lionel Lines in one arched line, NO Smoke Stack, top held on with 4 screws, Die-cast frame, plastic body.   For a short time, in 1946, a few were made with a gray top and black, heat stamped lettering, very rare, costly. Hook should face to the side, not forward.  Show price, Black like new $100 (gray top $250)

Look for:  right hook, cracks at base of boom at pivit, the coil coupler pikup shoe.

Crane tender Caboose 2419, light gray (matches gray top) $40?  2420, darker gray with search light $80?

Reappeared in 1952 with 4 wheel trucks on the die-cast frame, a Red top was held on with screws, Lionel Lines was now in two lines on cab. Collectible

The following years the top reverted back to Black, then the frame became plastic, the cab turned red with a smoke stack and snapped on without screws. The hook faced forward.

Aside from the overall apperance, what should I be looking at?  As always, many thanks.

You should be looking at a crane!! Blush [:I]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D] Sorry, the door was open! Ok, I would make sure of the following: trucks swivel freely, no missing wheels, axles not bent, wheels roll freely, couplers operate, crane swivels freely on the car body, crank at end of body raises and lowers boom, crank on side of body raises and lowers hook, Bucyrus-Erie is stamped on crane body. I also don't think a crane tender car comes with this crane. Lionel website say's the price is $59.99. Hope this helps, Ken
