Good Evening All

Power is on guys, I must have mislead you. I was watching the wind blow the wires back and forth and then a gust would blow them upwards and thats when I started to realize I was not prepared for an outage, except for the generator. the only thing we have been burning are the man made logs, and there is no heat from them. At least not much.

As you know Kurt was here today and we had a fun afternoon. only mishaps were the five finger ones changing engines. I noticed he posted a few pictures on the SPF he just had to get my santa belly in one. So banilla and root beer are on Kurt tonite he came prepared. Brutus fire up the Tardis..S.J.

Brutus - prayers out for your family as well.

Buckeye and Doug - hope you both recover soon.

Chief - I would agree with you, but hard to make that a law Wink

SJ - A Buckeye in Meatchicken land??? HOW do you do it???? Wink Hope your elec comes on soon... we were without power for 2 days and I nearly lost my mind! We WERE supposed to look into a generator, but it appears a new 50" plasma screen was more important (NOT my doing). I'm actually thinking two would be good, one for the fridges, freezer, and the well pump, then the second to use when we are home to run the TV and internet... we'll see.

Evening all!

Great day out of the house to run trains with Sir James!  Had a great time!  Hope the company lifted your spirits.  Thank you again for sharing your toys.  It was a pleasure to meet your lovely Bride.

Brutus:  Sorry to hear of your loss.  Prayers go out for you and your family.

Doug:  Great news!  The MOW car was located at an eastern junction, just outside of Detroit, recovered, and back at the Polak Junction, on a siding with guards.

Buckeye:  Hope things came out ok.

Six Boys And Thirteen Hands...

Each year I am hired to go to Washington, DC,  with the eighth grade class from Clinton, WI  where I grew up, to videotape their trip.   I greatly enjoy visiting our nation's capitol,  and each year I take some special memories back with me.  This fall's trip was esp ecial ly memorable.

On the last night of our trip, we stopped at the Iwo Jima memorial.  This memorial is the largest bronze statue in the world and depicts one of the most famous photographs in history -- that of the six brave soldiers raising the American Flag at the top of a rocky hill on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan , during WW II.

Over one hundred students and chaperones piled off the buses and headed towards the memorial.  I noticed a solitary figure at the base of the statue, and as I got closer he asked, 'Where are you guys from?'

I told him that we were from Wisconsin.   'Hey, I'm a cheese head, too!   Come gather around, Cheese heads, and I will tell you a story.'

(James Bradley just happened to be in Washington, DC, to speak at the memorial the following day.   He was there that night to say good night to his dad, who had passed away. He was just about to leave when he saw the buses pull up.   I videotaped him as he spoke to us, and received his pe rmissi on to share what he said from my videotape.   It is one thing to tour the incredible monuments filled with history in Washington, DC, but it is quite another to get the kind of insight we received that night.)

When all had gathered around, he reverently began to speak.   (Here are his words that night.)

'My name is James Bradley and I'm from Antigo, Wisconsin.   My dad is on that statue, and I just wrote a book called ' Flags of Our Fathers' which is #5 on the New York Times Best Seller list right now.   It is the story of the six boys you see behind me.

'Six boys raised the flag. The first guy putting the pole in the ground is Harlon Block.   Harlon was an all-state football player.   He enlisted in the Marine Corps with all the senior members of his football team.  They were off to play another type of game.  A game called 'War.'  But it didn't turn out to be a game.  Harlon, at the age of 21, died with his intestines in his hands.  I don't say that to gross you out, I say that because there are people who stand in front of this statue and talk about the glory of war.  You guys need to know that most of the boys in Iwo Jima were 17, 18, and 19 years old - and it was so hard that the ones who did make it home never even would talk to their families about it.

(He pointed to the statue)   'You see this next guy?  That's Rene Gagnon from New Hampshire.   If you took Rene's helmet off at the moment this photo was taken and looked in the webbing of that helmet, you would find a photograph... a photograph of his girlfriend.   Rene put that in there for protection because he was scared.   He was 18 years old.   It was just boys who won t h e battle of Iwo Jima Boys.   Not old men.

'The next guy here, the third guy in this tableau, was Sergeant Mike Strank.   Mike is my hero.   He was the hero of all these guys.   They called him the 'old man' because he was so old.   He was already 24.   When Mike would motivate his boys in training camp, he didn't say, 'Let's go kill some Japanese' or 'Let's die for our country.'   He knew he was talking to little boys.. Instead he would say, 'You do what I say, and I'll get you home to your mothers.'

'The last guy on this side of the statue is Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian from Arizona.   Ira Hayes was one who walked off Iwo Jima .   He went into the White House with my dad.   President Truman told him, 'You're a hero.'   He told reporters,  'How can I feel like a hero when 250 of my buddies hit the island with me and only 27 of us walked off alive?'

So you take your class at school, 250 of you spending a year together having fun, doing everything together. Then all 250 of you hit the beach, but only 27 of your classmates walk off alive.   That was Ira Hayes.   He had images of horror in his mind.   Ira Hayes carried the pain home with him and eventually died dead drunk, face down at the age of 32 (ten years after this picture was taken).

'The next guy, going around the statue, is Franklin Sousley from Hilltop, Kentucky.  A fun-lovin' hillbilly boy.  His best friend, who is now 70, to ld me , 'Yeah, you know, we took two cows up on the porch of the Hilltop General Store.  Then we strung wire across the stairs so the cows couldn't get down.   Then we fed them Epsom salts.   Those cows crapped all night.'  Yes, he was a fun-lovin' hillbilly boy.   Franklin died on Iwo Jima at the age of 19.  When the telegram came to tell his mother that he was dead, it went to the Hilltop General Store.  A barefoot boy ran that telegram up to his mother's farm.  The neighbors could hear her scream all night and into the morning.  Those neighbors lived a quarter of a mile away.

'The next guy, as we continue to go around the statue, is my dad, John Bradley from An tigo, Wisconsin, where I was raised.   My dad lived until 1994, but he would never give interviews.   When Walter Cronkite's producers or the New York Times would call, we were trained as little kids to say 'No, I'm sorry, sir, my dad's not here.  He is in Canada fishing.  No, there is no phone there, sir.   No, we don't know when he is coming back.'  My dad never fished or even went to Canada.  Usually, he was sitting there right at the table eating his Campbell's soup.  But we had to tell the press that he was out fishing.  He didn't want to talk to the press.

'You see, like Ira Hayes, my dad didn't see himself as a hero.  Everyone thinks these guys are her oes, ' cause they are in a photo and on a monument.  My dad knew better.  He was a medic. John Bradley from Wisconsin was a caregiver.  In Iwo Jima he probably held over 200 boys as they died.  And when boys died in Iwo Jima , they writhed and screamed, without any medication or help with the pain.

'When I was a little boy, my third grade teacher told me that my dad was a hero.  When I went home and told my dad that, he looked at me and said, 'I want you always to remember that the heroes of Iwo Jima are the guys who did not come back. Did NOT come back.'

'So that's the story about six nice young boys.  Three died on Iwo Jima , and three came back as national heroes.  Overall, 7,000 boys died on Iwo Jima in the worst battle in the history of the Marine Corps.   My voice is giving out, so I will end here.  Thank you for your time.'

Suddenly, the monument wasn't just a big old piece of metal with a flag sticking out of the top.   It came to life before our eyes with the heartfelt words of a son who did indeed have a father who was a hero.  Maybe not a hero for the reasons most people would believe, but a hero nonetheless.

We need to remember that God created this vast and glorious world for us to live in, freely, but also at great sacrifice.

Let us never forget from the Revolutionary War to the current War on Terrorism and all the wars in-between that sacrifice was made for our freedom.

Remember to pray praises for this great country of ours and also pray for those still in murderous unrest around the world.

STOP and thank God for being alive and being free at someone else's sacrifice.

God Bless You and God Bless America.

REMINDER:   Everyday that you can wake up free, it's going to be a great day.

One thing I learned while on tour with my 8th grade students in DC that is not mentioned here is . . . that if you look at the statue very closely and count the number of 'hands' raising the flag, there are 13.   When the man who made the statue was asked why there were 13, he simply said the 13th hand was the hand of God.

Great story - worth your time - worth every American's time.

RT, that is terrible news.  I'm so sorry for your family.  We have a niece who's daughter, an Iraq veteran, took her own life too some time ago.  Prayers for all the folks on here who have lost love ones recently including Brutus.  All I can say is what the preacher said at my Father's funeral on a rainy day.  He said "somewhere the sun is shining".  Hard to see it though at times like these.  God bless you all,

Thanks guys, I'll be fine.  Had ultrasound today after my morning case.  Will have to check results and take a few more tests to verify things.  Will have to schedule surgery sometime soon.  Got a busy last day of the year tomorrow, 9 cases to do.  Also, some of the cases require extensive post op follow up, so I'll have my work cut out for me.  Going to head to bed right after this post.

Sir James, hope you and the family get the power on soon.  Have several hundred trees down here you can have, but I thing transport could be an issue.  I have seen a number of Georgia Power trucks heading north, perhaps to your neck of the woods.  They have  a large fleet of trucks here and crews to work them due to the hurricanes, tornados, etc., and often, they are heading to other areas to work.

Brutus, sorry to hear your news too.  Lots of such news lately.  Makes one take pause to remember the important things in life.

Have a great day,
Dennis

Sir James,

My dad is bringing up a 7000 watt 120V generator tomorrow.  It's a Kohler cast iron beast with almost no hours on it, but doesn't do 220V.  2 30 amp strings though.  Came out of a motor home in the 70s.  Runs well.  You are more than welcome to use it for a while if you can come get it.  It weighs some 400+ pounds.  I'm in the center of Ohio...

It's a sad day.  The trains have been put away for a while.  As we are renting a house, space is at a premium.  Ironically, now that they are away, I want to play with them more than ever.

Sunny and cool  here in vegas.  Daughter is sick, so I'll be playing with her and keeping an eye on things.

Happy birthday to your Dad, SJ.  Smile

Well, these things go in 3's I guess.  I got a call this morning and my uncle Bill (William Bottoms) passed away last night.  He has been very sick for a long time.  He was an engineer on a bomber in WWII and flew many missions.  His parents died when he was a kid and he basically grew up living in a small town in Illinois on his own.  Some local families would take him in during the Winter time.  His first wife abandoned him and their girls, but later he met my Aunt and it was all good.  He was the head of his local union working for Reddy Killowatt until he retired about 25 years ago.  Great guy and I'm glad he is no longer suffering.  I guess the wake will be Friday and the funeral on Saturday, but we haven't heard yet.

Today, I just want to finish the wall I started yesterday afternoon and get the power turned back on for that room - that should take only a couple hours total, although I need to make some adjustments to a drop-down box I put around a drain pipe.  I need to relabel my circuit breaker box since I had forgotten that one outlet next to the door in the bedroom is wired actually to the playroom circuit - got a little tingle while I was taking it apart to put up drywall!  Remember - always test for live power FIRST Laugh  I think I might take the kids to a movie and then catch up with my wife for dinner out somewhere tonight as a treat.

(Edit) - Buckeye take it easy and prayers for a fully succesful surgery!  Dennis - ditto!  Don't wait too long!  My wife had a cholecystectomy and had a stone the size of a quarter!  I hope they can do it laporoscopically!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Happy Birthday...Sir James Sr.  Good that folks remember such occasions.

RT, Sorry to hear the news.

Chief, I got a few more goodies that we can try (experiment) on that Buckeye guy!  Buckeye, good luck.  As for what you post and the drugs, don't worry, we're used to it.  Just that now you have an excuseWink

Well, did a case this morning...kinda painful.  I have been sufferring  with symptoms of gallstones.  Today, it just got bad enough that I will be heading down for an ultrasound in a hour.  (it's good to be able to just call down and fit in the schedule).  Unfortunately, I won't be able to get it taken care of for another two weeks as I am still on call.

One thing before I go.  Laz's sister in law did a wonderful thing in donating her organs.  For those who have made that decision about themselves...please let your loved ones know.  The law requires the spouse, guardian, or next of kin to sign off.  If they don't know your desires, they may elect not to do it.

God Bless,
Dennis

Good Morning All

Prayers for those in need. The holidays can be a real downer for many. That bug got me for a day but a good shot from this forum snapped me out of it..We made it through the wind storm only to hear this morning there is more coming. My  daughters work lost power and then she went to R Us and the power went out there. I got to find some firewood somewhere. But those store bundles are overpriced and would not last long anyway. I have a small gasoline generater but that won't give us a furnace.

Kurt if you read this before you leave I do have some nice K-Line Pennsy Madison cars for your GG1 to pull. But no Lionel Lines until  the new old set is made. everyone have a good day. With your permission, thank you. Happy birthday dad, 1898-1960.  S.J.

Morning all. Feeling better today just achy - some grits bug! Sunny and 40s today - hoorah! Supposed to drop sub-zero again tonight - with winds from I-o-way - just in time for the Blackhawks' outdoor game in Wrigley Field. Prayers for RT and Buckeye. Hope to continue working on the layout- wish to move both Fortner yard and Baker Field to a more prominent position. Going shopping for New Years with the bride. She's invited friends over for dinner - we'll celebrate on Eastern time.

Heard about those hundreds of mini-earthquakes in Yosemite - isn't that field overdue for a real blow-up? I remember studying the ash field would reach Lake Michigan...

Morning all!

Doug:  Get well soon.

Chief:  ...Oy vey.

RT:  prayers go out to you, Ruby, and family.

I've been experimenting with the rail paints again.  Finally came up with a likeable combination.  I'll post pics later today when the sun comes up.  Pretty quiet day yesterday, nice being home.  Running trains with Sir James today!  I'll take the GG1 over to see if he has any madison passenger cars not protected by bullet proof glass.

Doug the C&O 16620 was parked on a siding awaiting the south bound, and seems to have been picked up by an east bound freight.

anjdevil - looks like you got bit by the dreaded triple post disease! I always enjoy my trips to the Big Apple.

Nah - he just felt compelled to type all that three times - must have been real important! Wink

RT - Prayers up for your family!

Chief - I hear you. Bet most of the people who signed that petition 1. Don't own a car to drive to where the liquor store is 2. Couldn't drive to the liquor store because they have no idea where it is located 3. Wouldn't know what to do with the liquor IF they could afford to buy it! I've got a real problem with people who feel it is their God given right to tell everyone else how to live their lives and what is right and wrong. Pretty simple: 1. Don't kill 2. Don't rape 3. Don't steal 4. Don't commit adultery... Nothing in the Good Book about not drinking...

It's been down right pleasant here, weather wise. 40's & 50's and 30's at night.  Figures, I'd roam the street of New York City on the COLDEST DAYS of the year (so far!).  I've been trying not to get home sick and not look for houses here, but the temptation is too great.  I wish I could come back here, just need a job (of all things!!!).  The trip to Virginia on Christmas and seeing my brother's home and family was great.  My Nephew has been accepted to Annapolis Prep School in Rhode Island in July 2009.  Then to Annapolis in 2010.  It's a great thing for him and the family!!  Another Navy guy (my brother was in th USMC, Dad was a squid).  Went to a Trenton Devils game in Trenton, and they lost to the Cincinnati Cyclones...bummer.  Tonight we had dinner with my sister and my brother in law at Longhorn.  Great feast, then went to my parents for coffee.  I found time to get up to speed on the 'pot tonight (still wired from the coffee!!).  Later today, I'll be taking the princess to her boyfriend's house (chaparoned by his Mom & Dad and 3 sisters!!!) until January 1 after dinner.  Supposed to get back in time for the Devils game on Versus tonight.  We're scheduled to get to the Devils game on Friday against the Canadiens (it's SKI CAP NIGHT!) and see the new arena.  My daughters first Devils game and my first at the "Rock".  Between now and then, have to get to Delaware for a visit and the greenburg show in Somerset, NJ.  Not going to make the Worlds Greatest Hobby Show in Pa, just too far away.  Went up into the attic and re-stored the rolling stock my Dad has, replaced the newspaper with acid free paper and resealed the rubbermaid storage bin.

That's all that fit to print right now, I'll try to check in later in the week.  Be safe and have a Happy New Year (I'll be here at my parents house as they are having a small celebration here)  It's just good to be "home"!

'till later!

Got some more work done on the basement and also some good time with the kids, so all is accomplished....  for today!  Tardis is ready - sounds like Doug M got some grits in his coffee?  We'll have to do a yankee potroast transfusion!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Laz, I just caught up with the last couple of days posts on the pot.  Our condolences and prayers are with you and your family.  Tough way to spend Christmas.

ChiefEagles

Dougsnotagrump, will have to check that out.  Got a link, send it to me.  Hate to use electric fence on her.

Here's the link Chief, http://coyoteroller.com/home

What a day at the museum today ! Walked in this morning to a real PIA. Three fried switch motors, a broken rail(no epoxy of course) and a crash in the canyon that wasn't cleaned-up prior to the previous runners leaving either saturday or sunday. Angry  Grumpy
