Noma Talking Train Station
Posted by Serows1 on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 8:19 PM
I have two Noma talking train stations from the 50's and both sound units have fallen apart due to age. I was able to find the turn table and decals a few years ago at a show but the record, belts, and speaker/needle I cannot find. There is a tear in the paper cone of the speaker and the record is cracking apart. Can the paper speaker needle be repaired? Does anyone know where I can find parts for these?

Wow, I haven't seen one of those for many years.  No I don't know where you could get parts, but doubt if you will find any.  Sorry.

Complete stations in working order appear on Ebay frequently.

Hi,  I was just searching the train forums for NOMA station information and came across your post. I am trying to restore my childhood NOMA station and need to find a replacement motor. Do you have one or know where I can find one ?  I checked Olsen and Jeff (ttender) and neither have the motor.  Thanks, John TCA # 77-11520

Try this link:

http://www.jlmtrains.com/multimedia.htm

or

.chttp://wwwom/.jlmtrains

Updated information suggests that these links, while still active, are no longer a solution to the question that was asked. Sorry.

Serows1,

'Olsen's Toy Train Parts' and Jeff Kane's 'The Train Tender' are good sources, but bfskinner's referal to J.L. Mania's sound unit, in my opinion, is a better choice.
J.L.M's. unit is self contained with a sound chip in it and runs off of the same two size 'D' dry cell batteries, as the original turn table and disc.

J.L. Mania's replacement sound unit fits into the Noma Station and is actuated by the same cupola's/tower's roof top button, but the sound is louder and clearer, than the original unit.

Then, again that's my two cents worth.

Joe Mania sent an email to me that he no longer has sound units.

To quote Joe " I did make an electronic replacement. They haven't been available for over two years."

 jffpcf,

I am sorry, that J.L. Mania is no longer manufacturing the Noma Train Station sound units.

I hope, someone else is making them, for all of our sakes.
The newer sound units, which have a sound chip, fit compactly into the same area that the original type fits into, function the same way, but the newer unit's announcements are louder and clearer, compared to the original sound unit's performance.

Another problem with the original sound units are their composition plastic bodies, which with time, deteriorate causing the body to become brittle and crumble apart.
I know, originality of the parts.  But, that is if the part is in good shape and can function properly.

If, I knew that J.L. Mania was no longer manufacturing the newer sound units, I would have bought the other three announcement sound units, he made, for a variety.

Don't forget that the sound units can be activated outside of the Noma Station and can be placed anywhere, else.

I hope you are able to complete you mission by finding a replacement original, or reproduced newer one and I am sorry for not helping you, as per your E-Mail to me, as I intend to keep my original sound unit, which is in more of a sad shape, than what damage I caused it, years ago.

Take Care,

Ralph

I gave up and recently found my own solid state solution. Check out a recent video on youtube posted by Steve Eastman, as well as a video that I put on youtube where you can compare the original record player and the new sound unit.  The youtube search is "NOMA Talking Station"
