The archives is a great tool but occasionally I have to wade through it quite a while to achieve the "golden nugget" of knowledge I seek. There have been times when I could have saved myself some time by simply asking the forum as though I knew nothing about the archives, but then I would have raised the hackles of some old geezer (or a young know-it-all) for daring to ask such a stupid question.

AMEN DJ.

Jim and Chief aren't grizzled.  They are finely seasoned veterans.  Perhaps marinated. Bow [bow]

I have found great info I need by accident, usually when I'm looking for something else.  And I too have posted questions after an exasperating search, knowing full well the question MUST have been asked and answered many times before.

It's unfair to expect the vets to point us to the correct thread or post because they cannot be expected to remember.  Why?  Because the thread titles folks use are not specific enough, or in some instances, the thing one is looking for is in a thread gone astray from the posted thread topic.  Great stuff but lost unless one wants to dig for an hour or two.  Instead of: "Please Help with my problem..."  Try: "My postwar Lionel 736 loco stopped smoking, help!"

I have read and researched countless threads about pellet and fluid smoke units and have learned a lot.  One question that seems fairly common is: what is the correct amount of smoke fluid to use.  How about in a Lionel postwar loco meant for pellets?  Or what happens if you use too much?  Well, I found the answers in a 5 year old post, complete with the answer and a Lionel link as backup.  The answer is classified.  I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

Many of the problems we have with the archives are self inflicted.

Jack

PS: The answer is two (2) drops, per Lionel.  Too much and the smoke unit may fail, and the excess fluid may create other functional probems.  Practically speaking, the vets would be a better source than Lionel because they've done the real testing a million times over the decades and found out by trial and error.  Sorry, off topic.

Yea, isn't searching the archives fun, you can learn soooooo much! If only everybody that uses all forums would use that feature you wouldn't see the same redundant stupid simple question. The worst are the car boards always asking the same camshaft question.SoapBox [soapbox]

As I am new to this hobby, I know that I have asked a few questions that you call "stupid". But everyone, except for maybe one person, who posted an answer on the board was very helpful and did not mind explaining it to me, again. I did use the search and got some information but the information in the archive is only as good as who posted in that thread at that time. Maybe a person who added a suggestion to one of the threads that I started will be helpful to the next Newbie that will be thinking of the same question. Or if he does ask the same question he will get different feedback from possibly the same people or possibly more or different people. So the postings will not be exactly the same as they are suggestions by those who are posting at that time.

But I also want to say that I am very thankful for the knowledge that a lot of the vetrens share on the board and that they keep posting and helping out the newbies, like myself.

So to all the "Grizzled Vetrens Smile [:)]" (you know who you are) Thank You!

Obviously, there was no malice in my comments. Smile [:)] But, if Grizzled Veterans doesn't click, how about Old Schoolers?

It is the feedback I get from the grizzled veterans on the board that keeps my interest stoked.  If I feel like I have hit a brick wall, someone is always kind enough to provide a helping hand.  As I continue to gain experience, I hope I will be able to do the same.

John

I feel there are a lot of guys who [like you] are really taking the reins and answering questions.  I just sit back and watch.  An thread usually does not "sit" long without an answer.  This is good.

Hey Stubbs, what question does everyone ask about cam shafts?

Jim

They want to know which one they should use. Lift, duration, etc. instead of doing their homework. It would be kinda like seeing the same question here of "which track should I use?"

isnt that what they are doing  when they come to a forum and ask questions?   there homework before tackling a project.......

Ozzy, we do not mind explaining to new people answers to questions.  This forum is very relaxed and that is why it is so popular.

I've been looking for answers in past forums and find you guys reply to alot of questions.  I just found a thread on installing pink insulation in smoke units and it really made my steamer smoke great!  If there weren't a few guys out there to help us less experienced, we would have alot less fun.  thanks
