ZW size / control panel
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, February 2, 2004 12:03 AM
Hi, I have ordered my ZW, along with the amp/volt meter and would like to start building the control panel for my layout. Does anyone know the dimensions for the ZW with the meter attached.
Also, any suggestions, ideas, links, plans for building a control panel? I have 2 4x8 sheets in an L-shape and will be hanging the control panel off the side.
Thanks, Bob

My Modern-era ZW with Volt-Amp meter panel is 12" wide, 8 1/2" deep, and 7 7/8" tall. Without the meter, the depth would be 6 1/4" and the height would be 6 1/2".

I can't help you with a control panel. I operate with a CAB-1 remote for both conventional and TMCC operation, so I don't need one. My ZW is bolted to the top of a small microwave cart, while the "bricks" are mounted on the back of the cart. I store my instruction manuals, smoke fluid, oil bottle, and grease tube on the shelves. The cart rolls out from under the layout when I want to run trains, then back under when I'm done.

There is a new book by Peter Riddle that may contain information about a control panel as it covers wiring of train layouts. My old "How to Wire Your Model Railroad" by Lynn Westcott has a chapter on control panels. Now the book deals with HO but the ideas for the control panels should transfer across the scale line!
