Housekeeping- an explanatory message to users
Posted by selector on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 1:47 AM

The moderators must occasionally delete a post that is not in keeping with Kalmbach's policies and rules for participation in their fora.  Members should understand that if they click on "reply" and address the offensive material, or add to it with their own comments, each such reply becomes what we call a "daughter" post.  When the mods delete the initial post, all daughters are automatically deleted concurrently.  That will account for any one user's post seeming to disappear when it was entered as a reply to a deleted post.

Note that when a user quotes a previous post, the software doesn't seem to recognize it as a daughter, even though it is for all practical purposes.  So, we are sometimes left with an offensive message deleted, but it's footprint is liberally visible in the ensuing posts where outraged, amused, bemused, and otherwise frenzied responders want to have their say too.  Naturally, the deletion of the offensive material hasn't accomplished much unless the moderator doing the deletion also manually culls replies where the offending post is quoted.  So you should not be surprised to see those types of semi-daughtered replies of yours dropping from sight.

I hope this message is understandable and that it offers some clarity and closure to what may have been puzzling disappearances of your replies over the past few weeks.  Nothing personal, just good housekeeping.

Happy New Year, everyone!
