If you are still having difficulty, I suggest you try the following:  Green Bay TV Service and Trains, phone 920-496-9697, railtycoon.com, or www.rllines.com for more information on this new design track cleaning car.  If you look at page 30 of Classic Toy Trains January issue, you'll see the unit.  Hope this helps.

Brad,

That web site you provided got me to one of those "error pages".  I did go back to the site using 3rdrail.com.  The only phone numbers displayed are "920" area codes.  There were no other numbers displayed anywhere on the site.  Maybe there's something screwy with my site connection, but I tried it twice.  I guess they don't want to sell too many of those, or they would not make it difficult to order - like a toll free number.  Also, no info on the site about acceptable payment methods.

Here's the phone and email info I pulled off of the III Rail Trains website:

Phone 763-767-9545
Fax 763-767-8276
EMAIL 3rail@winternet.com
OUTSTATE ORDERS 1-888-291-7245

http://www.3railtrains.com/  ... then click in the lower left on go to III Rail Trains main page.

Brad,

I, too, am interested in that track cleaning car.  However, it appears the phone number is not toll free.  Do they take credit cards?  The web site offers no way to order.

Try this link to III Rail Trains .   There is an 800 number for out-of-state orders towards the bottom of their web page.

I have a TRACKMAN 2000, after reading your question I threw some o-27 track together and it was fine.

The track cleaner car mentioned in the prior post was just shown in the new products section of the January Classic Toy Trains issue.  I have seen this car in action at a couple regional train shows here in the N East Wisconsin area, and can report it is a very effective track cleaner.  I have put in an inquiry to see if it can negotiate O27 switches without interference, as my layout is O27.  I also have a Centerline model and will use both of these in tandem should the new model handle the switches.  This new track cleaner is well worth investigating!

Here's one that uses paint rollers from your local home supply store.  I just purchased it last weekend and haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Check it out: 3railtrains

A bit spendy, but I like the fact that I can get replacement rollers easily.

Fred, I've made my own - out of an old weighted flat car and two scotchbrite pads underneath - I drag it solo or mid-train around the layout area - with the least switches and it seems to work well - at least the pads get dirty. I don't put anything on them - just pop them off and clean them.

I use the same Centerline car for cleaning the track and I use Goo-Gone, too, but I just run a dry roller to remove the Goo-Gone.  I will need to try the alcohol method to see if it improves the cleaning.

Of course, when the rollers are dirty, I put them in a sock and throw them into the washer.

Interestingly, with Lionel Cruise Control, it is sometimes difficult to tell if you have dirty track because the cruise will compensate for the dirt. Shock [:O]

If I were going to try something else, I believe I would purchase a Lionel Track Cleaning Car and change out the pads to Scotchbrite with Goo-Gone.

BTW, indoor track does not get that dirty when compared to the track for the garden railroad.  I use a grill cleaning pad and Goo-Gone.  When a squirrel decides to use your track for his commode....well, you get the picture.

Anyone have any experience with track cleaning cars as to their effectiveness? What make? What did you put on them as a cleaner if anything? Thanks, Jake
