I also tried gluing washers to the top of the canisters and had the same problem of the magnet picking them up off center.  Here's what I came up with and it works great.  Cut a 1/2" washer in half and hot glue it vertically to the canister.   I also use strips of steel attached to the pipe loads, make sure that the steel is bent up to a point in the middle so that the magnet will pick them up straight.

The first log dump car is a modern Lionel 9300, it uses a spring to unload and is activated over an uncoupling track.  The other one is a postwar Lionel 336155 that uses a solenoid that will ratchet up the unloader one step at a time every time you press the unload button and will also reset itself.  To use this log dump car you need to have an uncouple track that also has the sliding shoe power taps to activate the solenoid.

Thanks for your comments on my layout.  It has been a lot of fun puting it together.  I have a new digital camera and I hope to have even better videos available soon.

How did you get the cannisters and lumber load to lift vertically.  I tried gluing washers on canisters, but the magnet would never center on the washer and so the cannisters were cocked when I lfted them.  Both of your videos were very nice and I really liked your layout.

You have two log dump cars in your accessory video.  The first dump car dumps the car in one action.  The second dump car uses a ratcheting action to dump the logs.  What car number is that?
