Lionel 6-18005 Hudson 700E

Anyone have knowledge of this 1990 Lionel product? There seems to be several 'mint' units on the market at about half the original price of $1,695. Did CTT do a product review?

  Great locomotive, I have one, LOOKS like the pre-war 700E #5344.

  Cab number #5340, it's lettered in white, pre-war was silver.  Center driver is blind (no flange) and it also has an undersize pilot truck (scale size was made available for seperate sales). This let it run on track curves smaller than the pre-war O-72 did.   Early electronics, pre-dates TMCC. Came with a Display Case with plexiglas cover

  Over produced, the list of $1700 quickly fell to a "street price" of $1200.  It now seems to have leveled off at train shows etc. at $800-$900.  Lionel made a full length Video about building it using as many pre-war part molds and dies as possible.  Copies of the Video are still out there.

Perfect. Just what I wanted to know. That explains the pricing. Two went for ~$600 & $900 on eBay last weekend.

They are great looking. Too bad about the mixed state-of-the-art.  I'm just looking for one to compliment my F3's (both vinatage and 1990's) on a room size floor layout I am planning for future holidays that will still hold its value at least.  If I had the original 700e I wouldn't run it.

I found the following transaction dated 6/3/07.

"..with a set 6 car set of Lionel 18" scale heavyweight cars, pullman green, produced for the Commordore Vanderbuilt, but look super with the 700E."

"Only $290"?! I bought a much nicer one than that for $120 (no boxes)! Ouch! That's some expensive paper!

And I don't think the 2055 came out until 1953.

This site appears to support your contention, although there may be a difference between year cataloged and year actually produced. Too complicated for me.

I have a 6-18005-700E we purchased it new in 1990. We did get the other front wheels but I removed them cause they only work with O-72. For sounds it has Railsounds 1 with a hall sensor for the sound trigger on the tender. Smoke comes out of the steam chest and there is a constant voltage headlight. This was my last engine with a mechcanical E-unit.            

 I have been fighting the urge to upgrade it to TMCC. The back is open there is a nice open slot between the tender body and the frame for a tether. The loco came with a scale couplier and a standard couplier in the box, an SD couplier would easily fit in its place. The 783 was simply to convert and this locos tender is larger so will see?

Anyone have a part number for the scale wheels? I knew about the coupler, but never heard about a different wheelset. Very interesting...

The instruction sheet that is with the scale truck I have is marked 71-2800-250.  There is no number on the padded envelope the wheelset came in.  I never installed the scale wheelset on my Hudson.

Fast forward to 2011. One new in box just went for 225 plus 18% premium. This economy shows no mercy even on toy trains.

I think a lot of people sold them off when the new Vision 700E came out this year so the demand isn't as high.

It is a nice looking model none the less. Modern sound and smoke does trump 1990 technology.  I've never seen the 1990 run but if it ran well it should be worth more than 225.

A lot of Toy Trains are being "dumped" at any price but people that suddenly need money.

A GREAT TIME TO BUY,  buy low - sell high!

As for the 1990 Hudson its a good runner but I sure would like updated sound for it.
