Wiring a conventional switch throw to an Atlas Switch
Posted by Fred Bear on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 4:55 PM
Would anyone know how to wire the 3 wire switch that comes with Lionel switches to an Atlas switch? I'm in 3 rail O scale. My AIU crapped itself and I"m going back to conventional for switches & accessories.  I have the little deal that has a red & green light, 3 wires. I cannot for the life of me figure out what goes where! Easier with Lionel switches where track power comes into play, still simple, it's just eluding me. Anyone? Thanks much, Jake

Fred,

I don't know how well a Lionel O gauge switch control will work on an Atlas as the Lionel control has light bulbs inside it and the Atlas is probally just a switch control with momentary contacts and no light bulbs. The Lionel control should work if you remove the light bulbs from it, 022 switch controls were made with lights and the 022 switch solenoids have a feature that releases the solenoid to keep it from burning out unlike the Lionel 027 switches.  The wires may be differant as to which one to hook up but with some testing you can get it to work.

I wired them up with the bulbs in them and they worked just fine. Both lights are on all the time however, but when you throw the switch, they blink. I kinda like em' that way! Jake

Wire the middle post on the atlas switch to hot. Wire the middle wire of the Lionel controller to common. Wire the two remaining wires from the switch and the controller, Left to left and right to right. If it doesn't do what you want, reverse the two outside wires. Jake

Jake,

I had the same problem when I used an 022 controller on an 027 switch, both bulbs stayed on all the time.
