How about a Post War Lionel 2046 New York Central Hudson with a 2046W tender or a PW 2056 with the same tender but without magnetraction.  Prices vary but not often expensive for both at operator's grade.

The Dreyfuss is very nice but usually was used with the streamlined 20th Century cars.

Thanks for the information guys. I think im going with the 4-6-4. Dreyfuss. Any suggestions of what I should expect to pay for a middle of the road solid performer?

Are you kidding? Who doesn't like the sight of a scale or even semi-scale hudson. They are beautiful engines!

The 15" cars are not scale.Almost any Lionel semi-scale Hudson would be appropriate.Williams also sells a nice semi-scale Hudson.

I would go with a NYC scale hudson. They were the railroad's main passenger engine. If they are the scale madison cars you need to go scale hudson for the realistic look IMO.

From what I have read on the hudsons, they are passenger locomotives, not freight locomotives.  The 4-6-4 alignment allows for high speeds due to the large boiler, but the fact that there are 8 non traction wheels and only 6 traction wheels doesn't allow most of the locos weight to be used for traction (starting heavy and long trains).  A 2-10-0 would be a better freight engine.

If you don't like the look of a hudson then you can go with a pacific (4-6-2) or atlantic (4-4-2) class engine which are also passenger engines.

Hello Guys

I just purchased a set of 4 madison 15 inch NYC passenger cars. The are gray and dark grey with the sillohutes. To be as realistic as possible what steam loco should I purchase to pull them. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

JJ
