Dealer Display Layouts
Posted by PostwarMan07 on Thursday, August 9, 2007 8:59 PM
I was looking at dealer display layout reproductions and have become interested in building one or maybe using the style in my layout. I saw "Classic Lionel Dealer Display Layouts You Can Build" on Amazon.com for $100.00. This seems a little high. Is that price due to the fact that its no longer in print? Are there any cheaper options than this?

thanks for the replies guys.  I checked my local library and there were no copies.  I can't believe the difference in price between your link and amazon.com!!! ($87 cheaper)  I will be ordering my copy tomorrow.

John,

The best source for information on Dealer Display Layouts are old Lionel Advance Catalogs.  These were catalogs sent out to dealers, retailers and distributors in advance of the release of the regular catalogs. Using these Advance Catalogs orders were placed for the upcoming season.  In these Advance Catalogs Lionel included attractively priced Dealer Display Layouts as a means for dealers to generate interest in their products.

I have a collection of these Advance Catalogs from about 1953 to 1963 and I find them fascinating, especially the layouts. You'll also find the designs fairly easy to duplicate.

Are the advanced catalogs hard to find?  I also love looking through old instructions and catalogs that I find from time to time.

Your website is what got me interested in these layouts.  Frank53's site had a link to yours.  I think my favorite so far is D-264.  Its the super O layout from 1959.  I like the layouts with two running trains and the over/under theme.  (D-164 / D-147 / D-264 etc...)  If I go with D-264's theme I will be using tubular track and may enlarge and alter the plan a bit.  Thanks for the replies!

The Super O D264 (5'x9') and D265 (8'x8') are my personal favorites.

Advance Catalogs can be obtained from some of the TCA members who specialize in paper collectibles.  One that I know of is Bob Osterhoff, 1622 Garden Valley Drive, Wildwood, MO 63038. I think he sells on Ebay, so you can check there as well.
