BTW, not necessarily. From what I understand, Lionel varied how it did things from time to time and didn't always stick to a plan except when it came to the numbering sequence. For instance, from what I've learned, their 3 digit steam engines were "O" gauge while the 4 digits were "027". For their rolling stock, the 4 digit number indicated things like car type, coupler type, etc. Sometimes they put a set of numbers before or after the car number to identify a color, color combo and such. For instance, I have the 6436 Quad Hopper in all three colors, Black, Maroon and Red. They are numbered 64361, 643625 and 6436 respectively, which is stamped on the side. You'll notice that only the Black and Maroon cars have their color designations included in their car number (1 & 25). The Red car, which should have 110, does not.
