Grayson,

I remember when I first joined the forum. I thought I was always being pointed out because I was young. But, that was not the reason at all. The reason was because I thought I knew everything there was to know. The great people on this forum helped me to be a better communicator (if thats a word?). They warmed to me when I calmed down, and we all have a great relationship now.

So, you are not being pointed out.

I'm without question the most immature poster on this forum and no one makes those kinds of remarks to me. They just ignore me and hope I'll go away. But every morning I'm right back here again.

There have been several notable young posters here that I recall. Jerrylovestrains and Ben10ben may be young, but they know their stuff. It's always a pleasure and an education discussing things with them. Colin posts a lot on the coffee pot thread. No one seems to care how old he is.

So I really don't see the age thing being an issue here. If you contribute something worthwhile, you will be treated with respect. If you contribute worthless nonsense (like I do), you will largely be ignored or told to shape up.

Don't take it too personally.  It is just how people in general interact.  Older people will often point out a younger person's age mostly to identify the conversation at that level.  We don't expect a younger person to have the experiences and insight that we do, but there are some exceptions as mentioned, Ben10Ben, Jerrylovestrains, Colin, etc.  These young men are often the guys who will jump in with some great answers to questions from older folks.  These are exceptions.  If you were to dive into your trains with the enthusiasm of some others, you will gain much knowledge and then it will be your turn to pass it along.

You should be proud of your age.  As you mature, instead of it being an excuse that people give you for how you act or what you say and do, it will eventually be a footnote that people add to how you act and what you say and do.  "Can you believe he knows so much?  And believe it or not, he is only 15".  In the end, it is not what people say or think about you, it is how you react.

Just let you all know, I feel everybody on this forum is my friend (well, maybe 1 or 2, one of them is Chief Whistling [:-^]Wink [;)]) I know I have had my fair share of being immature (alot of you know my 2 threads I created, and I got many (what I think) possible rude and immature comments, some of them were helpful, but some of them didnt help me hardly at all. But thats just me. In fact, I was raised in that I was treated as an adult, even now. Let me give you an example: I'm talking to my brother in law. We are having a good conversation about the upcoming hunting season, and he is treating me as an adult. Then, my brother comes. This changes things aroud, now I'm treated as a kid rather than adult.

My conclusion is, there should be no exuses to this comment: This is a forum about trains. We have come here to join together and talk about trains. Age should be no issue in this. No matter how immature you may seam, the MATURE adults should have respect for that you are a kid, and that you cant help the way you act. I personally think that alot of people have forgot what its like to be a teen.

Im 21 and haven't had a problem.  I've added my "two cents" here and there but mostly am asking questions.  I like this forum because there are people (older than me) on here that have been in the hobby for a lot longer than me and know a lot more.  I think ( heres my two cents again) that when young people go on here and argue on topics it rubs older people the wrong way.  Its like when my 10 year old brother tried to tell me that Mariano Rivera sinks and never was anything special...  Darn kids!!

Thanks Don - you are not the only one of that opinion.  The more posts I see about this, the more attention is drawn to the fact that MagicMan is a teen!

Now lets talk about trains.

Don, like I said. I am not reffering in anyway to anything that has ever happened to me, which things have happened, but I'm not reffering to them. I am talking about all teenagers as a group. Not as me.

Here is what I think about being treated: I think teens on here should be treated like anybody else. We are here to talk trains, not age.

Grayson,
It is because of threads like this that you keep creating that cause the problem.  If you want some advice on how to fit in, email Colin (tmcc man), he can give you some pointers.  We don't call out 'teens' or anything like that, if someone makes a statement or asks something in a certain way, we will ask certain things to assertain their knowledge level or something like that.  It has NOTHING to do with your age... but you keep bringing it up and therefore it has to be addressed.  By stating that you 'aren't referring to things that have happened' you MOST CERTAINLY are.... stop bringing it up.  Let it slide off your shoulders like a good hard rain and move on.

Believe me, there is a VAST range of age on this forum, more so than any other I have been on.  Trust me... I'm a young buck to the Chief and others... you have to sit back and read and learn, then when you screw up, take the blows like the rest of us and move on.  You can't go through life letting what other people say about you hurt your feelings.  You have to process what they have said, make adjustments if necessary and become a better person for it.  Learn from your mistakes, and do a better job of it than I did (or Jim A Wink [;)] did).

Another tip if I may... you came on here and within two weeks started your own 'coffee pot' that is one of the worst things you can do... don't go into a room and try to be the center of attention, you just end up looking like a fool and you will get no respect for it.  There is already a thread for young readers, if you don't like the tone of the 'pot'.  I'm 36 and I have learned a lot from the forum members on a lot of subjects other than trains... even some from Jim A!  Oh, try to stay away from Buckeye... he lives under a bridge and tends to smell like a troll every now and then... Laugh [(-D]

OH, one more thing 'If we don't like you, we won't make fun of you.'  So snap on that chinstrap, adjust your strap, and suit up!  Get in the game and take your hits like a real man!  Who knows, you may get to dish out a couple of your own hits once in awhile.  I recommend staying away from Fife's daughters... if you think we're a tough crowd they would eat you for lunch! I'm not familiar with the expression "pointed out", but that's besides the point. One of our forum members that is quite young often has posts that drive me "up the wall", but I have a feeling it's due to personality rather than age. I don't recall any responses here, or on the OGR forum, that "picks on" younger members.

I'm 65, and a lot of people joke about "old farts" at train shows having pot-bellies, being unwashed, and wearing suspenders. I weigh 144, and shower every day...but I still find it funny. If you are looking for something to be P.O.'d about, you will probably find it. Joe

Grayson,

In a way, I know what you mean about teens being pointed out. I have not noticed that here however.  Just relax.  At 20, I have never felt that I was targeted.  Just relax and enjoy the forum, and you will soon find that you fit right in here.

True story: When I was 25 (hardly a teenager), I published a book (not about trains). Another published author started ripping on the book. I protested. He pulled the age card--basically, "I built my first computer before you were born." Well, his math was off. He built his first computer in 1978, and I was born in 1974. Not to mention it wasn't relevant--I'd been studying this area of specialization for seven years, and he hadn't studied it at all. He didn't understand the subject matter and felt threatened.

"Before you were born" became an inside joke among my friends and I. As in, "I set up my first wireless network in 1999, before you were born."

So sometimes the age card can be fun.

But on a more practical side, I started posting on bulletin boards when I was 13. This was before the Internet was widespread. When I could contribute to a discussion, I did. If I didn't understand the discussion, I just read, or sometimes asked questions. I was careful about my spelling and punctuation and such, so sometimes people asked me where I went to college, which was kind of flattering, seeing as I was still in high school. I got in a few arguments here and there--typically they were similar to the Lionel vs. MTH wars. Sometimes I started it and sometimes other people did. Sometimes someone would take me aside and suggest how I might have handled the situation differently. I'm almost 33 now and sometimes that still happens, but a little less often than it did when I was 13. A little. Looking back, I'm glad the people who pointed those things out to me took the time to do it.

It's hard to go wrong by reading as many discussions as you have time to read, asking intelligent questions, and learning as much as you can. Within a year or two (which isn't as long of a period of time as it seems), people will be asking you questions. Trust me on that. I know I've asked Ben10ben a number of questions. I really did first start messing with trains before he was born, but I'm pretty sure he knows more about them than I do.

I will anxiously be waiting for your next thread, about unfairness to teenagers.

As this has gone just as the others, "OK guys stop picking on me and end this thread."  How many times before you get the message, Your the one that is prejudice against teens.  Give it a rest, or find a self indulgence group.

There I said it, not treating you with "kid" gloves.

"Waiting for your last word" (And as far as I'm concerned you can have it, no point in bothering with this anymore, (for me anyway.))

Grayson, I'll be blunt. The fact that you make such an issue out of this non issue makes me think that you are not who you say you are. In my opinion, the only reason you bring it up is because you want to make sure everyone thinks you are a teen.

This has happened before on this forum and you are following a familiar pattern.

Now, you're being treated as an adult and I'll bet you don't like that either.

The thread he strated down on the Trains forum about "Waving to an Engineer", got deleted.  He seems to chime in at just the right time to get everybody in an uproar. I have my suspicions also .
